The William McKinley Glee Club lives on.
Former cast members from Glee, Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, and Darren Criss, gathered in New York City to celebrate the Broadway debut of their fellow actor, Darren (known for his role as Blaine Anderson on Glee), in his new musical titled “Maybe Happy Ending”.
Last night, I spent time with my lovely high-school friend (Lea Michele), who famously portrayed Rachel Berry on Fox. In an Instagram post dated April 10th, she shared pictures with some of her fellow alumni, as they went to watch one of our schoolmates shine on the Broadway stage.
Additionally, Diana, portraying cheerleading captain Quinn Fabray on Cheerios, offered followers another peek at their enjoyable evening spent together.
Diana, aged 38, posted on her Instagram Story on April 10th, “An exceptionally memorable evening with these two.” She was referring to a tour Darren gave them around the set located at New York City’s Belasco Theatre. Diana expressed feelings of immense pride and deep emotion towards Darren, her friend, in this beautiful, emotional, joyful production.
It appears that performing together on Broadway has turned into a tradition for this group of actors. Not so long ago, Darren, who was 38 at the time, was merely visiting Lea, who had just begun her role as Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl,” a moment that felt like a dream come true for both Rachel Berry and Lea.
Lea posted on Instagram that this person has seen her sing ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ a number of times, and she ended it with a laughing emoji and expressed her affection for Darren Criss.)
Besides Darren, there were others present for the event. Specifically, Ryan Murphy, a co-creator of Glee, Jonathan Groff, a fellow actor who recently starred in Broadway’s “Hamilton,” and his wife Mia Criss joined him to watch Lea perform.
In truth, Lea, aged 38, and Jonathan, who is 40, have fostered a unique connection since they acted together in the 2006 stage production of Spring Awakening. This bond has proven resilient over time, surviving even the gossip spread online suggesting that Lea is illiterate.
After all, it was Jonathan who helped set the record straight once and for all just last year.
On a recent episode of the Tactful Pettiness podcast, Jonathan affirmed that he had witnessed her reading. To which he exclaimed, “Wow, I can’t believe it! Haha. Hold on, are you serious? You think she can’t read? How on earth did that idea even come about?
As a devoted follower, I can vouch for the fact that Lea never stepped into rehearsals without her lines memorized. In fact, I’ve personally observed her reading abilities up close.
“Let it be known,” he added. “We’re dispelling it.”
For those eager to delve deeper into the cultural sensation known as Glee, continue reading to uncover some surprising facts about this captivating series.
In the years following the conclusion of “Glee”, creator Ryan Murphy looked back at the series’ impact on pop culture and shared some insights into the tumultuous events that unfolded off-screen.
He shared with Entertainment Weekly that it was both the most exceptional period and the most challenging phase in his life. He further disclosed, “There was a significant amount of conflict among us. Many were involved romantically, only to break up later. It provided me with a unique preparation for parenthood, I must say.
Additionally, he pondered over his experience during the program, often thinking back with a tinge of remorse about the way he managed things in his role as the showrunner.
He confided in THR, “For the entire day, I was with them, and once work was done, we’d spend the night enjoying ourselves. In a strange, convoluted manner, I was attempting to recapture the childhood I never had.” He expressed that he believed they desired a parental figure, but instead, they didn’t want him dictating their actions or instructing them about life and relationships. If given the chance, he would change his approach with many of those actors, especially Lea Michele, Chord Overstreet, Darren Criss. However, there were some relationships that didn’t work out as planned, and he regrets this. Ultimately, he wishes he had allowed them to discover life on their own terms. Some of these individuals remain close to him, but others did not fare well, and this is something he regrets.
Moving ahead, Murphy developed popular shows like “Scream Queens”, “American Horror Story”, “Pose” and more. He reflected that “Glee” served as an invaluable experience teaching him what approaches to avoid in future projects.
Interestingly, Ryan Murphy envisioned Lea Michele, who gained fame for her work in Spring Awakening on Broadway, as the ideal choice for Rachel Berry. However, not all the Glee cast members had an effortless path to joining the show.
Before he was cast as Blaine, Criss auditioned for the role of Finn, the lead quarterback.
He shared during the Paleyfest panel that it was his very first audition, where he tried out for a pilot. Later on, he recalled watching the pilot to learn who had been chosen for the role he had applied for, only to see Cory [Monteith] and think, of course, that’s the obvious choice.
Initially, Colfer tried out for a separate character, but producers were captivated by his talent and crafted the character of Kurt especially for him since he auditioned as Artie.
Actually, it was Ryan Murphy who disclosed that Colfer’s audition served as the motivating factor in developing The Glee Project, a reality competition show that provided an opportunity for up-and-coming actors to secure roles on Glee.
Colfer expressed deep gratitude, stating, “This is an extraordinary honor as it feels profound when my work might inspire something that offers kids a remarkable platform.
Dianna Agron, known for portraying head cheerleader Quinn Fabray, was the last addition to the cast, securing her role just a day prior to filming the pilot episode.
At first, the character Quinn was intended to fit the typical mold of a mean girl. However, Agron’s genuine personality influenced the writers to alter the role.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Murphy expressed his feelings about casting Dianna as Quinn: “For me, it took away from the role.” He had envisioned her as a certain type, like Cybill Shepherd in The Last Picture Show. However, she gave the character a more human touch. She could cry very easily, which made the character empathetic with a conscience, a soul, and great vulnerability.
Agron would leave the show after season three, returning only for the 100th episode.
On the set of Glee, much like the corridors of McKinley High, there was plenty of flirting and romantic entanglements among its youthful cast members. (It’s interesting to note that Lea Michele disclosed in her 2014 memoir Brunette Ambition that she and Matthew Morrison had a brief romance prior to the show, which started on a Broadway stage.)
Michelle and Cory Monteith, who were famously portrayed as one of the show’s most memorable couples, had been dating for several years before Monteith’s sad passing in 2013. On the other hand, Blake Jenner and Melissa Benoist, currently starring on Supergirl, tied the knot in 2015 after meeting on set in 2012 while playing romantic roles. However, their marriage ended in 2016, and the divorce was finalized the year after.
Naya Rivera and Mark Salling had a brief relationship during the early seasons of their show, but it wasn’t a smooth breakup. As Rivera wrote in her 2016 memoir, “Everyone should have that one relationship where you wonder, ‘What was I thinking?’ You’ll learn something, and it won’t be regrettable… unless, of course, that relationship was with someone who possessed a large collection of child pornography. Then, by all means, regret everything.” This comment by Rivera referred to Salling’s indictment for child pornography in 2017. Tragically, Salling took his own life at the age of 35 in January 2018.
Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t start dating Brad Falchuk, one of the creators of “Glee,” until she came back to the show in 2014, which was more than a year after her separation from Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay. Their initial encounter was during her guest appearance on “Glee” earlier than that.
In my experience, navigating the idea of dating again after going through a divorce feels quite peculiar. As I found myself considering going out with Ryan, who, like me, was recently divorced and a father of two, it wasn’t the same as being young and spontaneous at a coffee shop. It’s more complex because there are children involved, and the emotional baggage from our respective divorces adds to the mix. In essence, it’s a whole new set of challenges.
They got married in October 2018.
During the duration of the series, there were hints suggesting a romantic relationship between Kevin McHale (Artie) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina). However, it was later revealed that what seemed to be a real romance was actually a “showmance”. This dynamic has now become a significant topic in their popular podcast.
Because of its widespread popularity and numerous song downloads (especially those from the cast’s interpretations of popular tracks), it might seem logical for any musician or band to grant Glee the rights to their music. However, several notable bands refused to allow the glee club to perform their songs: Kings of Leon. Ryan Murphy criticized the band members as being self-absorbed and short-sighted, as they “failed to grasp the big picture,” which was how the show could motivate children to participate in arts education through their music, such as their hit “Use Somebody.” A small Twitter spat ensued.
Slash declined an offer from Glee, stating he didn’t enjoy the show. Ryan Murphy, its creator, responded by saying that those who criticize in such a manner usually lack success, knowledge, and intelligence.)
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but share the latest buzz: even the mighty Foo Fighters turned down the show’s proposal, and none other than Dave Grohl himself took aim at Murphy during an exclusive chat with The Hollywood Reporter!
He remarked, “You shouldn’t need to participate in something like ‘Glee,'” he said. “Yet the person who created ‘Glee’ is taken aback that we’re not eager to be on his production…I watched for ten minutes, it just doesn’t appeal to me.
During the airing of the series, Colfer and Usherkowitz resided together and frequently hosted cast get-togethers at their shared home.
McHale stated on his podcast, Showmance, with Ushkowitz that those who appeared to be of age would often get excessively drunk. Later in the conversation, Colfer admitted, “Yes, I drank as well.” (During a 2013 Paleyfest panel, Colfer disclosed that his first drink actually took place at their shared apartment.)
Amber Riley, also known as Mercedes, lit up her inaugural and final cigarette during one of their numerous late-night sessions. The quartet was so tight that they referred to themselves as “JACK”, an acronym formed by the initials of each member’s first name.
During their concert tour, they too shared memories of their exhilarating nights out, with Riley disclosing an incident where she had a scuffle with an unknown woman in London alongside the group. Upon recognizing that she had landed a punch, she informed her security team who later compensated the woman to keep the matter confidential. Meanwhile, Colfer, not yet of legal drinking age, confessed to frequently sneaking into bars.
Since they were a youthful, tightly bonded group, much of what the actors experienced found its way onto the screen, particularly during the initial stages.
In an interview with PR.com, Colfer shared that there have been instances where he has discussed personal experiences with Ryan Murphy, who then incorporates these stories into the show. Additionally, Murphy occasionally asks for Colfer’s input on which songs he might want to perform in certain scenes. However, it seems none of them intentionally offer suggestions about a character or plotline. Interestingly enough, one such conversation between Colfer and Murphy led to an episode where a similar experience was depicted. Colfer recounted how he once wanted to sing ‘Defying Gravity’ in high school but was prevented due to being a boy, only for this situation to be mirrored in an episode of the show.
In the plot, Chord Overstreet’s (Sam) full lips found their place within a narrative and a tune titled “Trouty Mouth.
At a Paleyfest discussion, Overstreet mentioned, “It wasn’t until the jokes began that I even noticed my lips were special. And then they wrote that catchy tune about them!
Initially not cast as Finn in his initial audition, Darren Criss eventually emerged as a standout star during the series, making his appearance as Head Warbler Blaine Anderson in season two. His first scene, where he performed “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry, played a significant role in establishing one of the show’s beloved couples, Klaine (Kurt and Blaine). Additionally, this performance contributed to one of Glee’s most successful singles ever, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Criss, a prominent figure behind the hit YouTube show “A Very Potter Musical,” which was famous even before Glee (he, of course, portrayed Harry Potter!), was soon elevated to a main cast member and emerged as one of the key characters.
In my role as a devoted follower, I’d rephrase it like this: When Murphy was on the hunt for the perfect actor to portray serial killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, he left many stunned by his choice – none other than Criss. He attributed his decision to the captivating performance Criss delivered on Broadway in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Murphy shared with EW, “I had no doubt he could pull it off. Beyond that, I recognized his strong drive and ambition. Many might have only seen Darren as a musical comedy talent. However, after seeing Hedwig, I was convinced of his ability to portray deep, dark characters.
Criss’ performance on the FX hit series earned him a Golden Globe, Emmy and SAG Award.
Initially hired by the choreographer for teaching a dance routine, Heather Morris, known as one of Beyoncé’s backup dancers, was brought onto the show to teach Matthew Morrison the “Single Ladies” dance. Impressed by her quick wit and humor, producers initially cast her as a background player during a time when they needed an extra cheerleader. However, they soon recognized Morris’ potential and she quickly gained popularity among fans with her clever one-liners like “Did you know dolphins are just gay sharks?”. Recognizing her talent, she was promoted to series regular in the second season, eventually becoming a significant character during the Britney Spears tribute episode and forming one of the show’s favorite couples with Naya Rivera’s Santana.
In the thrilling fifth season, I found myself gracing the screens more frequently, following my life-changing decision to welcome a new addition to my family. Despite this joyous event, the incredible actress decided against reprising her full-time role within the cast.
During the peak of its popularity, it seemed as if everyone either made an appearance on Glee or aspired to do so. Notable guest stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos, Helen Mirren (via voiceover), Carol Burnett, Kate Hudson, Lindsay Lohan, Ricky Martin, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Whoopi Goldberg were among the many who graced the show.
Initially, there were certain celebrities announced as guest stars on the show who ultimately didn’t make an appearance: For instance, Javier Bardem was planned to portray a rock star character who became friends with Artie, but this plan did not materialize. Similarly, Anne Hathaway was initially slated to play Kurt’s lesbian aunt, though she never appeared on the show.
Jennifer Lopez also met with producers, but it never ended up materializing.
Following the salutes to Madonna and Lady Gaga, the TV series Glee delivered its most prosperous tribute episode in season two, titled “Britney/Brittany,” which was dedicated to pop sensation Britney Spears. (They also paid a second tribute to her in season four.)
According to Murphy, it was Britney who suggested her participation. It seems she appreciates the essence of the show, which is celebrating pop culture in a heartfelt, respectful manner. Her response affirmed this.
Unlike Madonna and Gaga though, Spears actually appeared as herself in the episode.
“I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!” the “I’m A Slave 4 U” singer tweeted.
I found myself greatly drawn to Heather Morris, expressing my feelings as, “Oh, how adorable Heather Morris is! – Brittany S. Pearce. What a joy it was working with her, and she’s genuinely delightful in person.
It was a major moment for Morris, who idolized Spears growing up.
As a young admirer, from the tender age of 12 to 16, she was my role model. In the comfort of my home, I would sing her songs and mimic her dance moves, having learned every step. I even had talent shows where I lip-synced to her music. Looking back now, I can’t help but reminisce about my childhood obsession with her.
The show Glee gained such immense popularity that its principal actors embarked on a nationwide tour from 2010 to 2011, selling out the majority of their 40 scheduled performances. Later, it even extended its reach overseas, performing in various European cities.
Murphy expressed his enthusiasm when he stated, “Since the audience’s reaction to our small performance has been swift and heartening, we felt compelled to express our gratitude in person. With a show like Glee that easily transitions into a concert setting, what better way could there be?” when the tour was unveiled.
The tour ended up earning a total of $40 million, which led to a two-week theatrical debut for “Glee: The 3D Concert Film,” utilizing footage captured during the cast’s concert in New Jersey.
By the year 2015, the sales of the show’s 16 soundtrack albums and six compilation albums amounted to a staggering 7.9 million copies. Additionally, their songs were downloaded more than 45 million times and physically sold approximately 53 million times.
It’s impossible to remain enrolled in high school, not even if you’re attending a TV high school. However, when Lea Michele revealed to THR that the main trio (Michele, Monteith, and Colfer) would not be returning for season four as their characters graduated from McKinley High, fans were taken aback. There were whispers about the possibility of a spinoff being developed by the producers, which might center around Rachel and Kurt pursuing their Broadway aspirations in New York City.
In simpler terms, Murphy stated that either you prolong a series for six years and face criticism for unrealistic plotlines, or you stay true to real life and ensure that characters who start as sophomores in high school graduate by the end of their senior year.
However, the threesome ultimately remained part of the show “Glee“, where the plot revolved around their post-college ventures and simultaneously introduced fresh faces into McKinley High. The network’s president had previously assured reporters that there wouldn’t be a spinoff of “Glee” before season four.
Nevertheless, season four marked a significant change for the program. Murphy informed Vulture that he offered the original cast members the option to leave if their characters had graduated. “I told them, ‘Anyone who wishes to continue on the show may do so,'” he clarified. Almost all of them chose to remain, but many reduced their roles to recurring or guest appearances.
In the third season of “Glee,” the competition series named “The Glee Project” debuted on Oxygen. This show saw participants vying for a spot in the main cast of the program.
Over the course of its two seasons, the show Glee brought on four finalists, including Samuel Larsen and Damian McGinty Jr., who won in season one, as well as runners-up Lindsay Pearce and Alex Newell from the same season. Blake Jenner, winner of season two, became a regular cast member in season five, while Ali Stroker, runner-up from the same season, made an unexpected return in season four.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t hide my excitement when I talk about Chris Colfer, one of the shining stars of Glee. He won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Kurt and later penned an episode in season five. Even though he’s written several novels and a movie adaptation of his book “Struck By Lightning,” he confessed that writing for Glee was a daunting task for him. But isn’t it amazing how such a fearless artist continues to push boundaries and create magic?
Initially when the idea was proposed to me, I firmly declined, as he stated in a Paleyfest discussion. I want to make it clear that I am not attributing any statements to my co-stars. The situation carried a significant amount of stress and pressure.
During the duration of the show, Darren Criss, who was his screen love interest, also contributed to Glee by composing an original tune titled “This Time” for the final episode.
Criss described the song as essentially being a heartfelt tribute to the overall experience. Performing it with Lea singing was one of the most memorable and significant moments in his professional career.
For Michelle, receiving a gift from Darren was incredibly meaningful. She exclaimed, “That was the best gift anyone could give me. Truly. The day I received it left me in tears. I was so overcome with emotion that I had to call my mom to come pick me up. It’s such a special moment, it created one of the most incredible memories I’ve ever had.
The song would go on to be nominated for an Emmy.
In 2011, a devoted fan of the TV show “Glee” found herself in a sticky situation when she disclosed significant plot details about the prom episode on Twitter. This revelation exposed most of the key events that had been carefully planned and executed by the creators over several months. Co-creator Brad Falchuk publicly criticized her, stating, “Who are you to spoil something that numerous talented individuals have worked hard for months to develop?
He then added, “hope you’re qualified to do something besides work in entertainment.”
2-year-old leaker Nicole Crowther reported receiving extremely hostile comments from fans and claimed that all local agencies shunned her, a term often used to indicate someone is being intentionally excluded or ignored.
She expressed surprise to TopMob News, stating, “I hadn’t anticipated it would be anywhere near as similar to what it originally was.” She now acknowledges her mistake, empathizing not just with the fans but also understanding why Brad and Fox executives might be upset with her actions.
In a short while after that, there was another Twitter controversy surrounding the show when someone unauthorizedly accessed Colfer’s account and posted a message saying he had been dismissed from the cast due to personal matters, with further clarifications to follow.
Following the widespread excitement among Klaine fans being put to rest upon the show’s representative denying that Colfer was departing, the actor subsequently spoke out on Good Morning America, labeling the rumor as “extremely disheartening.
“Some jerk hacked me,” he said. “It was a pain, it really was.”
In her 2016 memoir titled “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up”, Rivera disclosed that she had an abortion while the show was airing.
Around the end of 2010, Naya found out that she was expecting a child, approximately weeks after ending her relationship with actor Ryan Dorsey. They later got married in 2014, and he became the father of their son, Josey Dorsey. Their marriage ended in 2018.
As a devoted follower, I decided to keep the news to myself initially and concentrate on my professional journey. During one of my breaks from shooting an episode of Glee, I made the personal decision to terminate the pregnancy.
She expressed that every woman ought to have the freedom to decide for herself about having a child, and it’s unsettling to imagine a situation where this choice is taken away from her.
Following Cory Monteith’s unexpected and heartbreaking death due to drug overdose in 2013 at the tender age of 31, discussions ensued about how the television series Glee would address his passing and the void left by Finn’s character (with Murphy revealing they contemplated wrapping up the show entirely).
Following a long break, the series Glee acknowledged Monteith’s demise in the poignant tribute episode titled “The Quarterback.” This heartfelt hour of television was filled with emotion and solemnity as it unfolded on-screen, but the off-screen atmosphere was equally moving, as each cast member had an opportunity to honor Monteith within the episode.
In that episode, nearly everything was captured during the initial takes of each performance as both the actors and the crew faced immense difficulties filming it. Murphy remarked at the time that he had never encountered a crew who were unable to continue shooting due to their emotional breakdowns. The experience was incredibly challenging, and even working on it was tough for him because the cast and crew’s feelings, not just about Finn but Cory as well.
The episode concluded with Michele, Monteith’s partner, performing Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” and Rachel going back to McKinley High School to put up a plaque in the choir room that depicted Finn along with a quote from him saying: “The show must go…everywhere…or something.
Matthew Morrison commented on the filming process, stating that “[Lea] sang one of the first songs for the episode exceptionally well. Afterward, she said something along the lines of, ‘It can’t be harder for anyone else than it was for me.’ This showed us that our leader had taken a bold step forward and given us permission to follow suit. I believe we couldn’t have done it without her.
2013 saw a tribute article written by Murphy for Entertainment Weekly that disclosed the initial ending planned for Finchel’s story arc within the series.
Rachel returns to Ohio, feeling both content and unsettled, and enters Finn’s choir group,” he elaborated. “Why are you here?” he inquired. “I’m back,” she answered. Scene ends here. The story concludes.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: Amongst my sixteen tattoos, three hold a special connection to the world of Glee. During my photoshoot for the cover of Women’s Health U.K, I proudly displayed my “Finn” tattoo – a tribute that mirrored Rachel’s ink on the show, given in remembrance of Finn after his character’s passing. Additionally, I bear the number 5 as a token of honor for Monteith, who portrayed Finn and wore the football jersey with that number on the set.
She titled the Instagram post showcasing her latest tattoo with the phrase, “Here’s another one…for my Quarterback…#5.
Additionally, she bears a small golden star on her left arm, symbolizing her character Rachel and one of her lines from the pilot: “You might chuckle when I add a gold star to my signature, but it’s symbolic, and symbols hold significance. My gold stars represent ME as a shining beacon.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Michele shared that she, along with her co-stars Ushkowitz and McHale, got identical “Imagine” tattoos on their feet as a tribute to The Beatles, following a fun night out and a couple of drinks together.
She’s recognized for encouraging riskier actions, so we now have small tattoos on our feet, she explained. That decision seemed quite logical to us at that moment.
A significant number of the original cast members continue to be associated with the show even after it concluded in 2015, demonstrating that once a Glee club member, always a Glee club member.
Michelle and Chris have toured together as co-headliners, and Michelle sang at Chris’ wedding to his longtime girlfriend Mia Swier in February 2019. A month later, Chris attended when Michelle married Zandy Reich in a ceremony officiated by Murphy. Becca Tobin, who joined Glee in its fourth season and now stars in TopMob’s Ladygang, was also present since she and Michelle have remained close friends since their days on Glee.
In the year 2016, Jane Lynch served as the officiant at Tobin’s wedding. This event turned into a small Glee gathering, with Michele, McHale, Ushkowitz, Meg Doyle, Michael Hitchcock, Matt Hodgson, and Dante Russo all present to celebrate.
2018 saw Morrison gathering his New Directions comrades to introduce them to his newly-born son, Revel James Makai Morrison. He titled the photo of the group, which included Michele, Rivera, Riley, Morris, Colfer, Criss and others, as a “GLEE reunion”! Morrison commented, “It was a heartwarming evening spent with my dear old friends and new friend! Ohana…
Back in March, I got the most thrilling news as a die-hard Glee fan – Harry Shum Jr., one of our beloved Gleeks from “Crazy Rich Asians,” was back on our screens! This time, he wasn’t crooning musical numbers with the New Directions, but rather going head-to-head in rap battles on “Drop the Mic.” What a fantastic throwback it was!
