Today, April 10th, 2025, celebrates the fifth anniversary of the initial release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PlayStation 4. For clarity, this is not referring to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which was the enhanced version launched for PlayStation 5 in 2021.
Reflecting on the initial unveiling of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, it was showcased at Sony’s E3 2015 press event, a moment that has left us with chills ever since.
Five more years passed before the title finally came out, and at that time, it was clear to everyone that this was only the initial installment of a larger trilogy. In retrospect, the knowledge that this was just the beginning may have slightly dampened the appeal of the remake, but the excitement surrounding it remained enormous.
The remake received overwhelming praise and even attracted new fans who hadn’t played the original Final Fantasy 7. On the other hand, some spectators were taken aback by how well-executed the remake was, as Square Enix is often associated with challenging production processes.
In our own review for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we had generally favorable opinions, but they weren’t as overwhelmingly positive as some other reviews. We gave the remake an 8 out of 10, commending it for its unique hybrid combat system and character development. However, our criticisms centered around problems with pacing and minor story inconsistencies.
Has our perspective on the game evolved since that time? To some extent, yes. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has provided more depth to its precursor and has likely improved the overall experience due to this added context. Furthermore, it’s hard to ignore the lasting impact of Remake’s most memorable scenes, with the Jenova boss fight standing out as a classic among them.
