Mike Flanagan’s Next Stephen King Project Just Took a Big Step Forward

Mike Flanagan’s newest take on Stephen King‘s work is a beloved classic for many fans, following his adaptations of “Gerald’s Game” and “Doctor Sleep”. Now, Flanagan is stepping away from his projects at Netflix to create his next series at Amazon: a series inspired by Stephen King’s “Carrie”. Although this project has been developed for the screen before, it may surpass Brian De Palma’s original film. Unlike “The Rage: Carrie 2” and previous remakes of “Carrie”, our coverage doesn’t predict that they will outshine Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation.

As reported by Variety, a significant challenge has been successfully navigated by the project. It seems that the upcoming sequel has brought on Summer H. Howell for the lead role in the movie; Howell is most recognized for her roles in Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky, as well as her appearances on the SyFy anthology series Channel Zero. As Carrie, Howell will need to confront bullies, her domineering mother, and manage her telekinetic abilities.

As a movie aficionado, I’ve been eagerly anticipating my role as both writer and executive producer on the upcoming television adaptation of “Carrie,” which I will also be directing and serving as showrunner. This project has been in the works since October 2024, patiently waiting for an official series greenlight from Amazon. Although they haven’t set a specific release date yet, whispers suggest that we’re gearing up to start filming this summer.

In addition to taking on the role of Carrie, Siena Agudong has been chosen to portray Sue Snell, one of Carrie’s high school companions who endeavors to bond with the socially awkward teen before a unfortunate event occurs. Agudong is set to become a regular character in the series, having previously made appearances on Netflix shows like “Resident Evil” and “No Good Nick.

The upcoming version of “Carrie” may struggle to measure up against Brian De Palma’s initial interpretation, which was an enormous success and made over $30 million on a budget of just $2 million. Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal of the lead character, and the film’s climax left an indelible mark on pop culture. After it, there was a sequel titled “The Rage: Carrie 2”, a 2002 TV adaptation by Bryan Fuller featuring Angela Bettis, and another movie remake in 2013 with Chloë Grace Moretz stepping into the title role.

The upcoming series by Flanagan is described as a “daring and contemporary retelling” of Stephen King’s famous novel, Carrie.

The plot revolves around the character of Carrie White (Howell), a misfit high school student who’s been sheltered most of her life by her overbearing mother. Following her father’s unexpected demise, she ventures into the unfamiliar world of public high school. Here, she faces a series of bullying incidents that rock her community, and simultaneously discovers she possesses strange telekinetic abilities.

Currently, the movie “Carrie” doesn’t have a scheduled release date on Amazon Prime, but production is expected to start this summer. Mike Flanagan isn’t limiting himself to just one Stephen King project; he’s also directing “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston, which is an adaptation of King’s 2020 novella from the collection If It Bleeds. Additionally, Flanagan has plans for an adaption of “The Dark Tower,” with a comprehensive film and streaming series in development.
