Final Destination Creators’ Shocking Regret Revealed!

Although Final Destination has made a significant impact on the horror genre, its creators, including producer Glen Morgan, have expressed one regret about the film. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Morgan shared that they resisted the studio’s desire to incorporate a physical representation of death in the movie. Despite the success of the franchise without a mascot like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, or Ghostface, Morgan humorously noted that they might have been even wealthier if there had been merchandising opportunities for the film.

Initially, Reddick penned the story for the film “Final Destination,” earning him the credit. Meanwhile, Morgan and Wong were credited with the screenplay along with him. Reddick reminisced that New Line Cinema initially requested a unique antagonist for the movie, which he developed as the “Angel of Death.” This character was already present in the script when Morgan and Wong joined the project, excited to work on their first feature film after focusing on television productions.

Morgan reminisced, “It felt like a manifestation of Death itself.” They both exclaimed, “You can’t witness Death, and you can’t conquer it?” So they proposed, “Death is merely a power.” To their astonishment, New Line agreed, “Cool!” However, every Halloween, Morgan laments, “We missed the mark! There’s no costume to wear, there’s no action figure.

Despite often being categorized alongside other horror films of its time, Final Destination stands out due to this significant distinction: it lacks a traditional villain like Samara from The Ring or the haunted doll Annabelle. However, whether the series’ popularity would have been as enduring with a tangible antagonist is uncertain, and one can only speculate if Morgan, Wong, and Reddick would have shared in any merchandising earnings.

Nonetheless, elements from the Final Destination series are easily identifiable by their sequence of improbable events resulting in a character’s demise, a style that has been imitated and spoofed frequently over the past 25 years, drawing comparisons to Rube Goldberg contraptions.

It’s expected that Reddick, Morgan, and Wong will receive substantial earnings when “Final Destination: Bloodlines” premieres in theaters next month (May 16th in the U.S.). This long-anticipated sixth installment is finally set to release, with the earlier films of the series currently available for streaming on Max.
