The indestructible Thor, known for his eternal existence in comics, is facing an unexpected demise. Despite his title suggesting invulnerability to death, the situation seems to be different this time around. Al Ewing, writer of the acclaimed Immortal Hulk, and artist Martin Coccolo began working on Immortal Thor in 2023. Since then, they have challenged Thor with recurring enemies like Enchantress and Skurge the Executioner, as well as introducing a new menace: the Gods of Utgard. Unlike Immortal Hulk, which frequently involved the character’s death and resurrection, Immortal Thor has remained unscathed… until now.
Marvel has revealed that the upcoming issue #25 of Immortal Thor, scheduled for July, will be the last installment in the series. Writer Al Ewing and debut artist Justin Greenwood are set to collaborate on this conclusion. The storyline kicks off with issue #23 next month, titled “Death of Immortal Thor,” which seems ominously foreboding. In this final chapter, Thor, the Avenger, braces himself for a solitary confrontation against the wrath of the evil Gods of Utgard.
Although the Immortal Thor saga comes to an end, Marvel hints that this isn’t the final chapter. “In July, Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor storyline will culminate in a shocking finale, paving the way for Ewing’s innovative new approach to the Mighty Thor, set to debut later this year,” the Marvel press release suggests.
Marvel has unveiled both the primary and alternate cover artworks for issue 25 of Immortal Thor. Alex Ross is responsible for the main cover, while Martin Coccolo creates the “Death of the Immortal Thor” Connecting Variant Cover. The connecting cover showcases three distinct images of Thor: one depicting him as the valiant Thunder God alongside Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, and Sif with children cheering him on; another picture of a wounded and battered Thor kneeling in front of his enemies; and lastly, focusing on a statue modeled after Thor amidst skulls and ominous skies. These connecting covers can be found across issues 23 to 25 of Immortal Thor.

- THE STORY ENDS…
- At the end of his tale, Thor strode into Vidblainn, third land of the dead, whence nothing could return. And there, beyond all battles, beyond all cares, he stood and fought for justice one last time – against the great Serpent who wore his own face and held his own hammer. This was the story of the IMMORTAL THOR…and the deciding of his fate.
In the latest editions of “Immortal Thor”, the storyline primarily revolves around Thor grappling with the reality of his mortality despite being a god, and simultaneously introducing new characters who might continue his legacy. This is achieved by presenting different iterations of Thor himself and resurrecting his son Magni from an alternate timeline, thereby offering several possibilities for where the series could go post the predicted downfall of the Thunder God.
