How to fix Xbox controller bumpers and buttons without cracking it open

First, man created fire. Later, man created God. And then, he created WD-40.

WD-40 is considered one of the most versatile substances known today. This multi-purpose solution has numerous applications in various technical fields as well as non-technical areas. The solvent is commonly associated with easing squeaky hinges, but it can also be used to clean certain stains, deter insects from entering through cracks around windows, and prevent car locks from freezing.

Exploring its potential is limitless! Yet, should you share my curiosity about applying it across your Xbox controller in search of a solution, I’d recommend the WD-40 “Specialized” version instead.

Recently, I penned a guide on how to disassemble an Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 for fixing sticky bumpers. Some of you reached out and inquired about whether it could be done without causing any harm to the device.

Without actually opening it up and getting in there with tools, this might be your next best bet.

The regular WD-40 is meant for lubrication purposes, and it naturally leaves a residue behind to continue lubricating the parts. However, applying it directly into your controller without disassembling might not be wise due to potential damage to delicate components. Therefore, consider using WD-40’s specialized contact cleaner instead.

This particular variant is significantly thicker compared to regular WD-40, and upon completion of its task, it doesn’t leave any trace behind. It has the ability to dissolve dust and other debris that could accumulate in mechanical components, potentially resolving controller problems without the need for disassembly.

After discovering that my manual repair on the stuck bumper didn’t seem to solve the issue with my Xbox’s home button also becoming sticky, I opted for an alternative solution instead of dismantling it again (due to laziness). To my delight, this new method worked successfully!

  1. Pick up some WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner off Amazon from the link above. Make sure it’s the correct edition.
  2. Keep the tube facing all the way down, and spray straight from the nozzle directly into your Xbox controller’s bumpers, buttons, and other problem areas.
  3. Click the buttons and bumpers several times to help the WD-40 solvent work its way into the mechanisms.
  4. Give it 5 minutes or so to dry, and wipe off any remaining fluid with a tissue or the like.
  5. Test it out!
  6. If your bumpers and buttons are still a bit sticky, you may need to go nuclear and open up your Xbox controller to fix it.

It can’t hurt!

If your Xbox controller is experiencing a complete mechanical fault, you might have to disassemble it to identify and solve the issue directly. In some cases, larger particles could obstruct the solution provided by a cleaning solvent, necessitating manual intervention like using a straw to blow out the debris.

Another option is to purchase a third-party Xbox controller. These alternatives frequently offer great value, as they’re less expensive than the standard controllers from Microsoft yet come equipped with additional features such as Hall Effect joysticks and extra back buttons, without charging a high price.
