The enduring influence of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and its subsequent series, spin-offs, and adaptations spans over several decades. Its opening theme song is one of the finest among Western animated shows, as catchy and memorable as the titles from “ReBoot,” yet as accessible as “Black Clover.” However, the show’s iconic lines go beyond just a recap of events post-Fire Nation attack, resonating deeply with its audience.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has left an indelible mark on countless viewers through its skillful blend of sharp humor and profound, contemplative themes that resonate with both young and old. Boasting a mix of comical, wise, relatable, and downright silly dialogues, the series is rich in iconic quotes that fans continue to cherish fondly. With a multitude of memorable scenes and storylines, which lines stand out as the most unforgettable? We’ve got the top picks for you!
Secret Tunnel!
“Secret tunnel! Secret tunnel! Through the mountain! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel!” – Chong, Book Two: Episode 2
In the second episode of Book Two: Earth titled “The Cave of Two Lovers,” Aang, Katara, and Sokka stumble upon a carefree, musical group of wanderers. While Sokka is usually known for providing comic relief, his humor becomes secondary to Chong’s eccentricities as he grows increasingly frustrated and determined to reach their destination.
When Sokka is adamant about reaching Omashu, the laid-back lute player Chong starts crooning about an actual-legendary secret path through the mountains as an alternative. The tale behind this secret passage, involving a tragic split between two lovers, isn’t entirely clear, and there’s talk of a deadly curse connected to the tunnel. However, Chong shares enthusiastically which parts of the song he cherishes and recalls best.
My Cabbages!
“My cabbages!” – Cai the Cabbage Merchant
Similar to how Fred provides comical relief in the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants through his exclamation “My leg!” when he encounters misfortune, so does Cai the cabbage merchant add humor with his cry of “My cabbages!”. Initially intended as a one-time joke, throughout the series, this unfortunate man persistently faces threats to his cabbage stock and cart. His misfortune is seemingly endless, as he continually finds himself unintentionally in the path of Team Avatar and their adversaries, regardless of where he sets up shop.
Despite numerous challenges affecting both him personally and his vegetable patch, Cai managed to climb the ranks within the corporation and ultimately established his own Car and Technology Corporation, which interestingly enough, doesn’t deal with cabbages as one might initially think.
Toph’s Blind Jokes
“Oh no, what a nightmare!” – Toph, Book Two: Episode 13 in response to Sokka’s complaint, “It’s so dark down here. I can’t see a thing.”
Once Toph becomes part of our team, she brings a fresh, one-of-a-kind vibe to us all and offers a uniquely original viewpoint. Despite her visual impairment, Toph is remarkably resilient, managing most situations with surprising ease – at times, perhaps too much so. Yet, Toph has a knack for injecting humor into even the toughest circumstances, often using this as a running joke.
No matter if it’s Toph playing pranks on her friends by pointing at invisible things and making comments, accidentally stumbling upon mistakes despite her abilities, or her friends’ forgetfulness causing unintended jokes, Toph demonstrates a remarkable resilience that goes beyond her physical strengths, which we truly appreciate.
Uncle Iroh’s Wisdom Never Fails to Give Solid Advice
“There is nothing wrong with letting people who love you help you.” – Uncle Iroh, Book Two: Episode 8
On occasion, human pride can hinder us from accepting aid, leading to additional suffering and pain. While we often aim to be self-reliant during tough times, Uncle Iroh encourages us to embrace support from others, particularly when it comes from those who eagerly wish to help those they deeply care about.
Earth titled “The Chase”, Iroh offers the following wisdom when she expresses her desire for independence. Essentially, he suggests, “Though self-belief is important, receiving assistance from others can prove to be a truly valuable gift.
Melon Lord
“I am not Toph, I am Melon Lord!” – Melon Lord (Toph), Book Three: Episode 18
As Team Avatar – made up of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki, and Zuko – readies itself, it gears up for their impending confrontation with the Fire Nation’s ruler, the Fire Lord. In the eighteenth episode of Book Three, titled “Sozin’s Comet, Part 1: The Phoenix King”, the team rehearses various strategies to craft an effective battle plan.
In one exercise, Sokka creates a dummy resembling a scarecrow, adorning it with a watermelon head named “Melon Lord.” They use this for practicing strategies. To make things more authentic, Sokka assigns Toph the task of throwing flaming rocks at them. Eager to participate, Toph lets out a mad laugh and hurls large stones at their opponents, almost hitting Sokka accidentally.
Cactus Juice
“Drink cactus juice. It’ll quench ya. Nothing’s quenchier. It’s the quenchiest!” – Sokka, Book Two: Episode 11
In the eleventh episode of Book Two: Earth titled “The Desert,” following their thrilling ordeal at the submerging library, the team finds themselves marooned in a sprawling desert. Their friend Appa was abducted by sandbandits, leaving them no other choice but to journey on foot across the harsh landscape. With hope and spirits dwindling, they must endure not only the difficult terrain but also start irritating each other.
Amidst the grimness of their predicament, it’s Sokka who provides an amusing respite. In a desperate bid to slake his thirst, he guzzles down some mysterious cactus juice found in this seemingly desolate landscape. While his companions are wary of consuming suspect liquids amidst their struggle, Sokka, now tipsy beyond belief, spends the remainder of the episode tripping out and offering bizarre yet humorous observations.
Hope and Inner Strength
“You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.” – Uncle Iroh, Book Two: Episode 5
Observing the situation once again, another valuable lesson unfolds in Episode 5 of Book Two: Earth, titled “Avatar Day.” Struggling with their exile, Zuko resorts to stealing food and supplies to sustain himself and Uncle Iroh. However, even amidst their hardships, my uncle gently reprimands Zuko for his actions. It appears that surrendering to desperation triggers base instincts, leading to a vicious cycle of additional stress and troubles.
In another instance, Katara confides in Aang that “occasionally, it’s tougher to harbor hope and it’s tougher to show care.” At times, it becomes challenging to discern whether hope brings a sense of optimism or ironically adds to the feeling of disheartening. However, when we feel helpless, hope can serve as a powerful source of inner resilience against despair.
That’s Rough, Buddy
“That’s Rough, Buddy.” – Zuko, Book Three: Episode 14
In Episode 14 of Book Three: Fire, titled “The Boiling Rock, Part 1”, Sokka, intent on rescuing his father from Fire Nation captivity, is spotted by Zuko as he tries to slip away alone. Impressed by Sokka’s resolve, Zuko decides to accompany him. They embark on their journey in Zuko’s hot air balloon. Given that this is the first time they’ve ever tried to connect, their interaction starts off a bit awkward. However, as brothers often do, they eventually find some shared ground when discussing girls.
When Zuko shares that he had to let go of his girlfriend Mai, Sokka seems to understand his predicament, saying, “My first love became the moon.” Not quite sure how to interpret Sokka’s strange confession but wanting to keep their deep conversation going, Zuko can only respond with, “That sounds tough, friend.
Love Lends to Bravery and Resilience
“You miscalculated. I love Zuko more than I fear you.” – Mai, Book Three: Episode 15
In Episode 15 of Book Three: Fire, titled “The Boiling Rock, Part 2”, Sokka, Zuko, Suki, and Hakoda are attempting an escape from a Fire Nation sea prison. Meanwhile, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee make an appearance. Emotionally hurt by his actions, Mai confronts Zuko about breaking her heart. Despite her anger towards him, she finds the courage to defy her political obligations and loyalty to Azula, particularly since her former friend had openly expressed a desire for fear rather than loyalty.
Throughout their gloomy and brooding interaction, both Mai and Zuko reveal tender feelings beneath their stoic exterior. Occasionally, these emotions slip through the cracks in their tough facade with subtle, unconventional expressions of affection such as “You’re stunningly beautiful when you despise the world.
A Hilarious Perspective to Azula Being Unhinged With Her Friends
“My own mother thought I was a monster… She was right, of course, but it still hurt.” – Azula, Book Three: Episode 5
In Episode 5 of Book Three: Fire, titled “The Beach” on Ember Island, I found myself observing an unusual beach vacation taken by Azula, Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee. Despite beach getaways being a common trope in anime, this group’s imposing, aggressive, and pessimistic personalities added a unique flavor of humor to the scene.
Ty Lee seemed to relish in the flirtatious advances of others, while Zuko unsuccessfully attempted to reciprocate such affections towards Mai. Mai, on the other hand, couldn’t help but make gloomy remarks, and Azula perceived every interaction as a chance to assert her dominance, even when attempting to flirt herself. This beach episode offered a humorous yet insightful glimpse into their relationships with each other and their interactions with unsuspecting bystanders, providing a refreshing perspective on characters often portrayed solely as the “villains”. It served as a much-needed breather for the season, offering an intriguing exploration of their complex personalities beyond their roles in the story.
Avatar: The Last Airbender can be streamed on Netflix and Paramount+.
