Jason Aaron initiated his tenure on IDW Publishing’s revamped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series by splitting up the Hamato Clan brothers, scattering them across locations beyond New York City. Although the Turtles have regrouped and returned to New York, their physical presence together hasn’t mended their fractured family ties. The persistent squabbling and unnecessary arguments among the brothers might seem confusing to readers who are not familiar with sibling dynamics or raising multiple children. This ongoing dispute, which has yet to be fully explained in the series, may appear opaque to outsiders, as it hasn’t been clearly linked to an event that caused the Turtles’ estrangement.
In issue #8 of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we delve into the mind of Leonardo, one of the turtles, providing a personal perspective that deepens the ongoing four-way debate. This intimate look at Leonardo allows author Aaron to highlight his internal turmoil, as the traditional leader grapples with longing for the tranquility he once sought on the Ganges. However, this serenity is tested by one of his brothers. Could Leonardo’s introspective state be hindering him from choosing the most suitable course of action given his current situation? Furthermore, is Leonardo’s excessive focus on a corrupt villain exploiting the city, causing him to overlook chances to make a positive impact in the city that lies immediately before him?
Leonardo’s storyline serves as the main focus, but Aaron occasionally veers off to interact with other characters. D.A. Hale’s recent anti-mutant scheme may seem straightforward, yet in today’s era of widespread misinformation consumption, it doesn’t appear far-fetched. Simultaneously, there’s growing unrest within the Foot Clan, and April O’Neil finds herself at the brink of a change that could significantly alter her character in the series.

Juan Ferreyra’s artwork breathes new life into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with the artist’s talent for creative compositions and dynamic action shining brightly. The initial pages, which depict a fierce battle between the Turtles and the Foot Clan, serve as an impressive centerpiece that seamlessly integrates the environment into the storyline in clever manners.
In addition to his distinctive action-oriented design, Ferreyra is known for his atmospheric, slightly eerie style, which he employs effectively in this work. Donatello’s gaunt appearance starkly contrasts with his brothers’ muscular physiques, creating a chilling effect in every scene he appears. Additionally, Aaron is gradually introducing an otherworldly enigma into the narrative. Although it might seem unusual for the Turtles not to immediately grasp some of the hints given their past knowledge about their origin, it is plausible that they would find Donatello’s deteriorated state a more obvious explanation. However, this plot thread seems to be developing subtly in the background, and if it continues as expected, it could mark a significant turning point for the series.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles storyline has found its rhythm, with the turtles back together but their sibling rivalry causing ongoing emotional tension and drama, building up anticipation for a crucial turning point. Through Leonardo’s eyes, Aaron demonstrates a deep understanding of each turtle’s personality. Reading this issue leaves me curious if Aaron will switch perspectives to other turtles in the upcoming installments as they face their own breakthrough moments, which would be fitting given the arc’s origins. In any case, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 underscores that the series is being expertly handled.
