The Amateur – REVIEW

In the eyes of casting agents, Rami Malek may not initially seem like an action star, but in ‘The Amateur‘, he convincingly portrays Heller, a CIA cryptographer who resembles the typical office-bound computer geek. However, when Heller’s wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, his superiors suggest they handle the investigation into her death. Yet, much like someone who finds pleasure in simple trinkets, he feels dismissed and decides to take matters into his own hands.

Realizing my wife’s killers were still at large, I decided to take matters into my own hands, threatening my superiors to give me the green light. They agreed, but only after arranging for me to get some training from none other than renowned CIA operative, Henderson, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne. However, I quickly discovered that my firearm abilities were as comical as a line of dialogue mentioning the George Bush Centre for Intelligence – it seemed an oxymoron, more fitting for George Sr. rather than George Jr.

In this tale, I’m not your typical action hero blasting guns left and right but rather an intelligent man utilizing my expertise to eliminate four terrorists in a worldwide thriller. The story unfolds across various continents as I find myself in Turkey, Spain, and Russia.

According to Robert Littell’s book, Malek seems perfectly suited for a thriller role. This film appears to focus more on intricate deception rather than high-octane action scenes, as suggested by the trailer. One surprising element is an unforeseen death of one of the terrorists that isn’t shown in the preview. The cast includes Jon Bernthal and Rachel Brosnahan who delivers a strong performance, although her role seems underutilized. However, the plot has some inconsistencies – for instance, Malek effortlessly accesses high-security CIA computers without raising any alarms and he suddenly identifies and locates an anonymous contact whom he had never been able to identify before.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but see the potential in “The Amateur” to kickstart a unique film series, veering away from the typical action hero mold similar to the Jason Bourne franchise. This role seems tailor-made for the exceptional talent that is Rami Malek.
