The victims of a helicopter crash in New York City have been identified.
Augustin Escobar, who served as CEO for technology firm Siemens, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their trio of children (ages 4, 5, and 11) were among the unfortunate six lives lost in the Hudson River accident. Authorities informed ABC News that this family was tourists from Spain in New York City at the time of the incident.
The pilot, who also died, has not been publicly identified.
Approximately at 3:15 p.m., according to local time on April 10th, the New York City Fire Department received a report about a Bell 306 helicopter crash into the river dividing Manhattan, as reported by NBC News. Later in the day, it was confirmed by New York City Mayor Eric Adams that all six passengers aboard had tragically perished.
At a news briefing, he expressed sympathies, saying, “We’re sending our thoughts and appreciation to those affected,” also acknowledging the bravery and commitment of the rescue workers.
According to reports from NBC News, the helicopter that was being flown by a local tour company disintegrated in the air while it was cruising along the New Jersey coastline.
Social media posts contained videos showing the helicopter spinning and landing upside-down in the water, followed quickly by the helicopter’s rotors slamming into the water’s surface.
A resident identified as Avi Rakesh, who shared a video from location X (previously known as Twitter), stated that he observed a helicopter moving towards New Jersey. According to him, the helicopter’s rotor blade suddenly detached from the aircraft.
Rakesh informed NBC News that he’s unsure about the cause, but the tail suddenly fell off, a distance from the Holland Tunnel.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, they will help with the probe being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, aiming for a deeper comprehension of the incident.
