Over the past year, I have observed a significant buzz surrounding advanced AI tools such as ChatGPT from OpenAI, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini, and others. However, it’s worth noting that data suggests a discrepancy between the level of excitement about AI and its actual usage in everyday life by the general public. In other words, while there is certainly hype surrounding these technologies, it may not accurately represent the genuine interest or adoption levels among the public.
Moving on to the current year, there seems to be a shift in atmosphere as artificial intelligence progresses and models grow increasingly intelligent, capable of logical reasoning, and now equipped with a capacity for remembering past conversations.
According to reports from aitools.xyz, it appears that the notion of generative AI being a passing trend is debunked. In February 2025, this research firm examined activity data from over 10,500 AI tools, suggesting instead that generative AI is here to stay.
It’s not surprising that OpenAI remains at the forefront, possibly because of its two-year advantage in the AI industry which enabled it to create and refine ChatGPT without much competition, as suggested by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
As an analyst, I’d like to highlight that in the month of February 2025, my observations showed ChatGPT attracting over 52 times more visits than Microsoft Copilot did. What’s particularly striking is that ChatGPT’s daily visits for this period amounted to a staggering 173.3 million, significantly outperforming Microsoft Copilot’s monthly traffic of 98.9 million.
Although ChatGPT remains dominant, Microsoft Copilot saw an impressive 6811% increase in usage from one year to the next in 2024, suggesting it’s becoming more popular and catching the attention of many users.
In the previous year, at Microsoft Ignite, it was revealed that around 70% of the Fortune 500 companies are now employing Microsoft 365 Copilot. Although we don’t know exactly how many users this equates to, it demonstrates a growing interest in the tool and its widespread adoption among organizations for enhancing productivity.
Copilot has been trailing ChatGPT from the jump
By the close of 2023, Microsoft debuted mobile versions of Microsoft Copilot to challenge ChatGPT on equal ground. Equipped with complimentary access to DALL-E 3 image creation tech and GPT-4, users found themselves drawn more towards ChatGPT, opting for it despite the need to pay a monthly fee to utilize the features that Microsoft was offering free of charge.
As a tech enthusiast, I recently came across a fascinating report by Appfigures, revealing that Microsoft launching Copilot for mobile didn’t seem to impact ChatGPT’s installations or revenue. The slow adoption of Microsoft Copilot was primarily due to suboptimal promotional strategies, as it appeared there were no search ads deployed to enhance the app’s visibility on both the App Store and Google Play Store.
Microsoft has faced criticism elsewhere regarding the recent revamp of Copilot, as many users feel that it has negatively impacted the platform’s overall user experience. Certain Microsoft sources have described the update as a “step in the wrong direction.
At its recent 50th anniversary celebration, Microsoft unveiled a special Copilot event and released key features like Copilot Vision, memory, and Copilot Avatar. It’ll be intriguing to observe if these new functionalities spark curiosity about the tool, potentially increasing its user base over time.
It’s worth noting that a report indicated Microsoft’s AI division received many complaints about Copilot not being as effective as ChatGPT. Yet, Microsoft has refuted this claim, stating that the issue might be due to users not utilizing Copilot in the way it was designed. In other words, they suggest that ChatGPT might not surpass Copilot if used properly.
