As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Action Comics continues to shine in the Superman Superstars era, and the latest issue offers an exciting collaboration between Ms. Marvel’s creator G. Willow Wilson and current Poison Ivy writer Gavin Guidry. Their joint effort takes us on a journey with Clark Kent as he travels to Greenland, reporting on scientists attempting to re-freeze the Arctic. However, things swiftly take a turn for the worse when they’re ambushed by genetically enhanced polar bears! In such perilous situations, ordinary Clark Kent might falter, but Superman… well, let’s just say he steps up in a spectacular fashion. The Big Blue Boy Scout makes his entrance to save the day, and boy, does he look dashing! Instead of the traditional blue, red, and yellow suit, our hero dons an awe-inspiring all-white costume. To be honest, I can’t help but develop a growing obsession with this new look!
Throughout the years, Superman has donned various striking costumes, including multiple variations of his classic attire. One particularly noteworthy suit is the white one, which we’ve seen before. In fact, on special occasions, Superman often chooses to wear a white suit. These aren’t just stylish wardrobe changes; they are suits that aid Superman in his numerous fights. The white Superman costume carries a certain historical significance, and its appearance in Action Comics #1085 marks another chapter in its legacy.
Superman’s White Suit has Saved His Life Several Time
In multiple instances, the white suit has been seen, but its most significant appearances have revealed its purpose. In issue #11 of All-Star Superman, Superman faces off against Solaris the Tyrant Sun. Created in the distant future as a sentient star, Solaris serves as an ideal adversary for Superman due to its ability to transform Earth’s yellow sun rays into blue ones, thus stripping Superman of his powers. To combat this, Superman dons the white suit, which stores and converts various light frequencies into energy that Superman requires. In All-Star Superman, the white suit provides Superman with the necessary power to defeat Solaris; however, it is torn during the battle, leaving Superman with less power than before, as he later confronts a superpowered Lex Luthor.
In the comic series “All-Star Superman”, the white suit played a vital role in Superman’s survival and was instrumental for his powers. This suit reappeared in another storyline, “Superman: Lost”, where it became even more essential due to its advanced features. The story began with Superman being hurled across the universe, far from home, requiring him to find a way to harness energy from stars that didn’t have yellow sunlight. A new white suit was provided, which had an onboard computer system for navigation and still functioned as the old one did for his powers. Unlike the suit in “All-Star Superman”, this one had a traditional S-shield instead of a star emblem. Over the years of use, it also sustained significant damage, much like its predecessor. The white suits seem to charge Superman’s powers, making it an unusual choice given his current predicament. Lois advises Clark to wear something warm, so this new white suit might be a cold-weather version of the regular suit. Despite the circumstances, it remains an impressive-looking suit.
All Hail the White Super-Suit!
In the annals of superhero comics, the outfit worn by Superman is among the most enduring and memorable. The design, reminiscent of circus strongman costumes with its distinctive S-shield, has remained largely unchanged over time. Despite potential backlash from fans when alterations are made, certain iterations like the all-white suit featured in “All-Star Superman” and “Superman: Lost,” have been exceptionally well-received. Seeing Superman don this classic white attire again in Action Comics #1085 was a delightful sight to behold.
It’s puzzling to determine whether this modification in his attire is functional or merely aesthetic, given the historical white suits associated with him. Since white suits are believed to aid in maintaining his powers, it could be due to the high sunlight exposure in Greenland. Yet, even if it’s just a superficial adjustment, the new costume still looks stunningly beautiful.
Action Comics #1085 is on sale now.
