Anthropic copies OpenAI’s $200/month homework, but fumbles with restrictive rate limits that frustrate users: “I am canceling.”

With the ongoing growth and advancement of generative AI, there’s an increasing need for resources such as increased processing power (particularly GPUs), large volumes of cooling water, and higher operational costs due to these requirements in leading AI research facilities.

As a researcher, I recall last year when during OpenAI’s 12 days of shipmas, they introduced a new monthly plan called ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200. This paid subscription offers unrestricted access to OpenAI’s premier models, including their o1 reasoning model, which is designed to tackle even the toughest challenges with enhanced cognitive capabilities.

Currently, Anthropic has entered the competition with a fresh subscription option dubbed the “Max Plan,” designed particularly for individuals who frequently collaborate closely with Claude and require extended access for their critical projects.

Expanded Usage” and “Maximum Flexibility.

The entry-level plan is priced at $100 per month, offering five times the usage capacity compared to the Pro version. Conversely, the higher-tier plan costs $200 monthly and comes equipped with twenty times more usage than the Pro version. Anthropic describes the Maximum Flexibility level as “Perfect for frequent users who regularly collaborate with Claude on a variety of tasks.

Anthropic copied OpenAI’s homework, but fumbled the rate limits

Although many users find Anthropic’s latest subscription level appealing, particularly for heavy users, some users are not entirely satisfied with the monthly session limit of 50, as each session equals five hours.

The interaction with Claude begins immediately upon sending a message. Notably, if you communicate with the chatbot within five hours of your initial exchange, it will be considered as part of the same conversation. Conversely, any subsequent messages sent after more than five hours have passed will initiate a new session.

It seems like Anthropic might be trying to generate more buzz for its AI tool, Claude, but users are expressing dissatisfaction instead. On the dedicated subreddit r/ClaudeAI, users have been voicing their frustrations and discontent over Claude’s Max plan, particularly concerning its rate restrictions and limitations.

BREAKING 🚨: Anthropic introduces Claude MAX from r/ClaudeAI

According to one user:

If you send three messages per day, over 16 days, you’ll reach your limit. Calling it top-notch would be an understatement. I’m unsubscribing and stepping away from the subreddit. I can no longer tolerate Claude.

Another user got more creative with their frustrations:

Hello! It appears you have some funds left in your account, and we thought we could assist. Introducing our latest offer – the “Optimize Your Credit Card Utilization” program!

With the Max plan, you’ll experience: Significantly increased opportunities for rate limiting when you truly need Claude. Five times more dissatisfaction at a cost of $100 per month or twenty times more frustration at $200 per month compared to Pro. The chance to be an early adapter of our most sophisticated Claude features, along with the freedom to spend more as your desperation increases.

Even in the middle of your brilliant thoughts, it’s worthwhile for us to check in. We can’t wait to observe the innovative solutions you’ll come up with once the Max plan encounters issues, just like everyone else!

After the introduction of Anthropic’s Max plan, some Pro users have noticed a decline in their platform experience, suggesting they are reaching their limit rates quicker than previously. It’ll be intriguing to observe whether the company will garner more attention with its new Max plan or if it might lead some users towards competitors.
