Marathon Will Not Require PlayStation Accounts on PC and Xbox

Ever since Bungie was bought by Sony, there’s been a noticeable sense of anticipation, even apprehension, about their upcoming multiplayer game, Marathon, possibly demanding PlayStation accounts from users on non-PlayStation devices. However, the studio has officially clarified that there will be no obligation for players on PC and Xbox Series X/S to have PlayStation accounts when playing Marathon.

On social media platform X, user KAMI noticed and shared that the studio clarified through their Discord channel: Players won’t need to fret over PlayStation accounts because they can still play without using PSN on a PS5.

The “Marathon” team shared on their Discord that playing “Marathon” on PC and Xbox won’t necessitate a PlayStation account.

The studio known for hits like the original Halo series and Destiny 2 is working on a new game titled Marathon, which isn’t exactly a sequel to the ’90s trilogy but will continue the franchise’s lore, narrative, and themes in its next installment. This project was first unveiled as far back as 2023.

Further information regarding the Marathon game is set to be unveiled during the upcoming weekend. Bungie has teased this with a Save the Date trailer, offering glimpses of some of the upcoming shooter’s graphics as well. There are whispers circulating that Marathon might be launched in 2025; yet, no official details about this have been disclosed thus far.

Back in February, whispers started swirling that Bungie might unveil a special showcase for the legendary game, Marathon. And guess what? Those rumors were true! You see, as a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share the news that Bungie has officially announced a dedicated Marathon reveal event, much like they do for their flagship title, Destiny. Interestingly enough, when Marathon was absent from Sony’s State of Play presentation in the past, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb explained it’s because Bungie usually prefers to showcase its games independently.

As a devoted gamer, I can tell you that Bungie, the creators of Destiny, tend to march to their own beat. This year, they’re planning to stick with their ‘Directly engaging our community’ approach, so I’m guessing we might hear from them around April. If things go as expected, they’ll likely be sharing updates about Marathon, and it seems like this would be a standalone event separate from a State of Play.

The studio seems ready to reveal an official release date for the updated version of Marathon on Steam, given that it has been frequently updating its database entry. Just last month, an update to the Marathon database added several “app types” players might be able to buy, which could suggest microtransactions, a battle pass, or future expansion packs – similar to what’s common in Destiny 2.

So far, not much information about the game Marathon has been disclosed, but director Joe Ziegler has shared glimpses of several playable characters. Known as Runners, the two characters unveiled by Ziegler are Thief and Stealth.

Right now, the game titled Marathon is being worked on for release on Personal Computers (PC), PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re interested in understanding the themes and mythology that the upcoming multiplayer shooter might explore, you can take a look at the original trilogy of classic shooters, which are now accessible for free on PC via Steam.
