Ne-Yo is giving everything when it comes to his polyamorous relationship.
After presenting his four companions Cristina, Arielle, Moneii, and Bri to his audience, he later disclosed the frequent inquiries he’s received regarding a shared dating policy among his partners. Specifically, he addressed the question of whether they are each allowed to date other individuals as well.
Ne-Yo, 45, clarified on The Angie Martinez Show on April 10 that he didn’t initially seek exclusivity from the women he dated. Instead, they were the ones who requested it, and he made sure they understood that his exclusivity with them didn’t mean the same for him in return.
In their multi-partner relationship, Ne-Yo (born Shaffer Chimere Smith) emphasizes the importance of maintaining openness and honesty.
The primary guideline is simply to always be honest. We won’t deceive you, nor each other. There will be no falsehoods, no veiling of truth. We won’t create an illusion or sell fantasies, and nobody will be compelled to be present against their will.
He said, “If at any point you feel this isn’t right for you, know that the way is always open. You have my blessing to move forward as you see fit. I want everyone to understand that I’m not forcing or manipulating these women into anything against their will.
Additionally, just like Ne-Yo, a father of seven, has openly discussed his approach to introducing his girlfriends to his children, he went on to elaborate more about his personal transition into practicing polyamory.
He admitted that the situation wasn’t premeditated; instead, he gathered everyone he was already interacting with and openly shared his thoughts. He emphasized honesty, transparency, and giving everyone a clear understanding of the situation. He laid everything out in the open, offering them the choice to either join him or not. To his surprise, everyone decided to move forward together, leading us to this point.

For RuPaul and his partner Georges LeBar, an open relationship suits them because it aligns with reality, as RuPaul explained to The New Yorker in 2024. “Monogamy among men is a myth,” he said. In the end, their unconventional arrangement made practical sense for the couple.
RuPaul’s Drag Race star shared with Vanity Fair in 2019 that their union didn’t result from a conscious decision. He met his husband at New York nightclub Limelight in 1994, years before they got married. “The idea that monogamy is achievable is a hoax,” he said. “I wouldn’t restrict the person I love most on this planet. I wouldn’t do that to someone I cherish, my best friend.”
Maintaining an open marriage doesn’t cause them to question their love for one another. As RuPaul put it, “If something arises that you can’t resist and will bring you joy, pursue it. Because the truth is, I know deep within me like never before, that man loves me more than anything else in this world.
Originally, Kody Brown expressed, “Love should be multiplied, not diminished.” For several decades, he was part of a plural marriage with women named Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, Christine Brown, and Robyn Brown. Their experiences were chronicled on the show “Sister Wives”. In the first episode in 2010, Kody said, “I fell in love, then I fell in love again, and I fell in love again.” However, he has since distanced himself from polygamy. Christine and Kody announced their separation in November 2021, with him and Janelle confirming theirs in December 2022. A month later, Meri disclosed that their marriage had been permanently terminated. As a result, Robyn is now Kody’s only spouse.
In an interview with People in December 2023, he shared his perspective: “I don’t endorse polygamy personally, as I’ve had my own experiences and struggles with it. Therefore, one must exercise extreme caution when considering such relationships, focusing on the individuals involved and their approach.”
He added that while polygamy may work for some, there are also instances where it fails even among well-acquainted partners.
Following this lifestyle, several of his former spouses have transitioned to monogamy. For example, Christine remarried David Woolley in 2023 and expressed on the show that she wouldn’t return to polygamy again. On the other hand, Janelle has mentioned she might reconsider a plural marriage.
Robyn, however, stated during a 2024 episode that she would be open to polygamy again under the condition of ensuring a “positive and successful” experience.
In a 2021 episode of Red Table Talk, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter, Willow, opened up a conversation about non-monogamous relationships. She expressed that the essence of polyamory lies in the ability to establish a relationship style that suits one’s needs, rather than blindly adhering to monogamy due to societal expectations. Jada and fellow cohost Adrienne Banfield-Norris listened attentively as Willow spoke.
Willow further explained that the primary reason for relationship issues or divorce in monogamous relationships is infidelity. She posed a hypothetical scenario where one partner has a lower sex drive than the other, and asked if it would be fair to deny the other partner’s needs based on one’s own preferences.
However, Willow also clarified that not everyone in her friend group who practices polyamory is more sexually active than she is. This suggests that there might be disagreements within their non-monogamous relationships as well.
Shailene Woodley feels that the opinions that truly matter in a romantic connection are those held by the individuals involved. Back in 2020, she shared this viewpoint with The New York Times, having been part of both open and deeply monogamous relationships herself. She emphasizes that the current era should be free from predefined rules, allowing each couple to establish their own guidelines based on their unique partnership — whether it’s two or more people. However, she also stresses the importance of accountability in any relationship style, which boils down to honesty, open communication, and trust. Beyond that, she believes, it’s not our place to judge other people’s life choices.
Even when some fans express disapproval over my polyamorous relationships, it’s like water off a duck’s back for me. After all, I don’t live my life to please others, but for my own happiness.”
Ne-Yo, who was married to Crystal Renay for nearly seven years before their divorce in 2023, took the internet by storm when he presented his four girlfriends publicly in March.
In a February episode of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the Grammy winner stated, “It functions well for me,” he explained. “Everyone is honest, truthful, and consensual. I feel like I spent unnecessary time being dishonest about various matters. Had I approached things this way earlier, I likely could have avoided a great deal of stress and pain.”
However, it’s crucial to note that polyamory may not work for everyone.
“It’s essential to grasp that I’m not advocating for everyone to follow my path,” Ne-Yo emphasized. “I’m merely sharing what works for me. If you find it relatable, great. If not, that’s okay too. Regardless, I’m happier and more at peace than ever before, and that’s the significant aspect. I don’t require everyone to concur. I’m not doing this for others.
There has been much discussion about Nick Cannon having children with several women. Yet, the host of The Masked Singer has previously expressed his views on monogamy. During an episode of The Breakfast Club in 2021, he stated, “The concept of one person for life is a Eurocentric idea… A man should not ‘have’ anything. I have no ownership over this person. It’s about the exchange we create together.”
Nick shares twins Moroccan and Monroe with ex-wife Mariah Carey, children Golden Sagon, Powerful Queen, and Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell, son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi, and daughter Onyx Ice with LaNisha Cole. In addition, he welcomed three kids with Abby De La Rosa—twins Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir as well as daughter Beautiful Zeppelin—and two with Alyssa Scott: daughter Halo Marie and son Zen, who unfortunately passed away.
“Those women and all women are the ones that open themselves up to say, ‘I would like to allow this man in my world, and I will birth this child,'” Nick added. “So, it’s not my decision. I’m following suit.
According to Omarion, monogamy feels more like an outdated idea than something that resonates with him. In an episode of Sherri in February, he elaborated on this, saying “being open is crucial” for him.
He explained to host Sherri Shepherd that there are far more women than men, and since there are only a few good men, they should all work together to raise the next generation. He continued, “It’s not just going to be one man. Even if you get married, that man is still going to have other responsibilities – he’ll be there for his daughter, for his mom, and his grandmother.”
In Omarion’s view, this approach isn’t necessarily new, but it does need an update. He believes that more conversations about this topic should take place.
“I enjoy having this discussion because I think when men are honest about not wanting just one thing for the rest of their lives, it gives women the chance to decide and better understand a man,” the musician stated. “Because I believe that many women don’t truly understand men. While some women do, there’s a broader conversation that needs to happen about understanding men and how we’re meant to spread our genetic line.
