Meowth

What Pokemon is most often associated with Jessie and James? In “Go West Young Meowth,” it’s revealed that before teaming up with them and joining Team Rocket, he used to live on the streets. Before meeting them, he fell in love with a female Meowth and learned human language to win her affection. However, when their relationship ended, his ability to speak human language came in handy when he joined Team Rocket. With this talent, Meowth became an essential part of the legendary trio alongside Jessie and James.

In the entire series of Pokémon, Meowth acted as an interpreter between Jessie, James, and other Pokémons due to his unique ability to understand human speech. In “Pokémon: The First Movie,” Meowth translated Mew’s language for Jessie and James. Being a Pokémon, he was often treated like a human and expected the same treatment in return, distinguishing him from other Pokémons. Unlike most Pokémons who reside in Pokeballs, Meowth never confined himself to one and instead regularly assisted James and Jessie in their efforts to capture Ash’s Pikachu by helping them devise their schemes.

Koffing

In the anime, Koffing was the initial Pokemon that James owned and featured, and it was also the first one he caused to evolve. As a handy escape companion, he received this Pokemon from the head of Team Rocket, Giovanni, prior to the main storyline in the episode titled “Island of The Giant Pokemon.

The trio often managed to slip out of tricky situations thanks to Koffing’s foggy smokescreen trick, making it a valuable addition to the team early on. In “Dig Those Diglett!”, it evolved into Weezing during a fight against a pack of Diglett, which ultimately proved to be more than it could handle. Later in “A Poached Ego!”, James was instructed to leave Weezing behind in the woods with Jessie’s Arbok to safeguard a young Koffing.

Ekans

James received Ekans, a Koffing’s companion, as a gift. They first appeared together in “Pokemon Emergency,” where Jessie attempted to seize control over the Pokémon Center in Viridian City to steal all the Pokémon. The duo was eventually defeated by Ash’s Pikachu. In the episode titled “Dig Those Diglett!”, Ekans evolved into Arbok, a form that would remain with Jessie for many years.

In the forest, I noticed that during their adventure, Jessie intentionally placed her Pokémon, Weezing, alongside an evolving Ekans. This was Ekans, the first Pokémon of hers to undergo evolution, as depicted in the anime series.

Machamp

During his tenure as head of Team Rocket, Giovanni temporarily loaned his Machamp, along with Rhydon and a Kingler, to Jessie and James when he had to step away from the gym. In a subsequent fight against Ash, it became evident that Machamp was the most formidable among the three Pokemon.

In the gym fight, Machamp swiftly dominates Ash’s Squirtle using its Karate Chop attack, compelling Ash to replace Squirtle with Bulbasaur. Despite not being one of Jessie or James’s Pokemon, it was an incredibly powerful one that gave Ash and his team a tough challenge during the battle for the Earth Badge.

Wobbuffet

In the episode “Tricks of the Trade”, Jessie ended up with Wobbuffet through an accidental trade. Despite Wobbuffet not having any offensive attacks, it turned out to be quite beneficial on numerous occasions. After witnessing Wobbuffet’s counter move in “Power Play!”, Jessie had the idea to construct a robotic duplicate of Wobbuffet that could mimic its counter ability. Throughout the Pokemon series, Wobbuffet primarily used Counter and Mirror Coat, similar to its video game character counterpart.

In the opening episode of “Pokemon the Series: XY”, titled “Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin”, Wobbuffet nearly beat Ash’s Pikachu thanks to Mirror Coat. This move reflects physical attacks with double the force, making Pikachu’s blows ineffective. However, at the last second, Froakie intervened using his unique Frubbles, which are not typical attacks. This tactic allowed him to win the battle. In the anime, Wobbuffet is often seen exiting its Poké Ball on its own and giving a salute, causing trouble for Team Rocket’s schemes, much to Jessie’s frustration.

Growlie

In simpler terms, we can say that James has had a Growlithe named Growlie as a childhood companion. As a child, Growlie was the only friend James ever had. Later, when James moved away, he left Growlie at his parents’ place. They meet again in the story “Holy Matrimony!”. Despite being separated for years, Growlie recognized James and defended him against Jessebelle upon his call. In another encounter, in “The Treasure Is All Mine!”, when James, Jessie, and Meowth were hiding, Growlie stood up to protect him once more from his family, enabling James to escape safely.

Cacnea

In the story “A Poached Ego!”, Cacnea first crossed paths with James as he was being pursued by aggressive Beedrill. To save themselves, Cacnea fired Pin Missiles, successfully scaring off the Beedrill. As a token of gratitude, James handed over a bag of cookies to Cacnea. Later on, when James encountered Cacnea once more, he offered it a cookie and eventually managed to capture it.

In the anime, Cacnea, during its time with James, frequently attempted to embrace James, causing him discomfort, adding another comedic trick to the beloved duo’s repertoire. In “Gaining Groudon,” however, Cacnea utilized its pin missile to swiftly overpower two Pokemon. After suffering defeat in a battle against Gardenia, the leader of the Eternal Gym, she proposed that he train her Cacnea, which James eventually consented to.

Seviper

Jessie captured Seviper as her first Pokémon during their time in the Hoenn region. A disheartening encounter for Ash and Treeko when they faced off against it, since Grass-type Pokémons struggle against Poison-types. It initially appeared in the episode “A Tail with a Twist”. Inkay

In the Kalos region, James encountered a wild Inkay during “A Battle of Soaring Skills.” As they were floating in a hot air balloon, the Inkay snatched some of their food. This infuriated Jessie and Meowth who tried to fight it off, but instead of joining them, James decided to lure it using some of their provisions. With the Inkay preoccupied by the bait, James was able to catch it effortlessly.

The mischievous creature swiped some food from their group, upsetting Jessie and Meowth who tried to fight it off. But rather than engage in battle, James thought of a clever plan – using the stolen food as bait to lure the Inkay closer. With its attention on the food, James was able to easily catch the unsuspecting Pokémon.

James forms a close relationship with Inkay quite swiftly, an unexpected heartwarming scene unfolds in “Facing the Grand Design” as it chooses to stay with James over returning to the wild. After their adventures in Kalos, James departs Inkay at Team Rocket’s Headquarters.

Mimikyu

In “Loading the Dex!”, the third episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Mimikyu was first introduced. This event took place on Melemele Island in the Alola Region, where Team Rocket crossed paths with it. Jessie attempted to capture Mimikyu using Meowth, but her efforts were unsuccessful. When Mimikyu got angry upon meeting Ash’s Pikachu, it vowed to assist the trio in capturing Pikachu. In “First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-style”, its Play Rough move proved particularly potent when going up against Pikachu. Eventually, Jessie was able to catch Mimikyu using a special ball.

In the course of Team Rocket’s stay in Alola, Mimikyu fought tirelessly for its trainer, Jessie. Despite possessing immense power, Mimikyu is a Pokémon that carries deep sadness and loneliness within it. To mask its true form, it must always wear a cloth that resembles Pikachu. When Giovanni instructed them to return to headquarters, Jessie chose to leave Mimikyu behind in Alola.
