Three new actors have been added to Blumhouse’s revamped version of the classic monster franchise, “The Mummy,” as reported by Deadline. Lee Cronin’s unique interpretation of this timeless tale is set to include a trio of talented actresses from around the world. Leading the fresh faces is May Calamawy, who gained recognition for her role alongside Oscar Isaac in Marvel’s “Moon Knight” series. She will be joined by Veronica Falcón, an accomplished performer whose work spans from “Ozark” to “Queen of the South,” and Egyptian actress May Elghety, who made history as the youngest actress from her country to compete at the Cannes Film Festival. This global cast indicates that the production may be taking a more diverse approach to storytelling than previous versions of the horror franchise.
The trio of actresses are now part of the cast alongside Jack Reynor (from “Midsommar”) and Laia Costa (“The Wheel of Time”), setting up what appears to be a captivating group. Details about the storyline are still under wraps, fitting for a movie based on mummies. Filming has already started in Ireland and Spain, with Cronin at the helm. He’s shown his talent for horror in “Evil Dead Rise” previously.
This new Mummy movie breaks significantly from the usual distribution pattern of the franchise. Unlike past films like Boris Karloff’s 1932 classic, Brendan Fraser’s action-oriented trilogy, and Tom Cruise’s unsuccessful Dark Universe kickoff, this reboot will be the first major Mummy film not released by Universal Pictures. Instead, New Line Cinema (a subsidiary of Warner Bros.) is now in charge, with Blumhouse Productions and James Wan’s Atomic Monster producing the film.
Calamawy, known for her role as Dena in the Emmy-winning Hulu series “Ramy”, boasts both Marvel ties and a rich background in dramatic acting for this project. Born in Mexico, Falcón offers a wealth of experience from film and television, with roles in “The Purge” franchise and Disney’s “Jungle Cruise”. Elghety has made a name for herself through Egyptian TV shows like “Grand Hotel” and internationally through Disney+’s “Kizazi Moto”.
The plan to revive “The Mummy” is being made following the disappointing performance of the franchise’s latest film in cinemas – the 2017 movie starring Tom Cruise that aimed to kickstart Universal’s series of linked monster films, titled Dark Universe. Instead of trying another action-adventure blockbuster, this new version seems to be opting for a more genre-specific approach by bringing on board up-and-coming horror director Cronin and production company Blumhouse, known for revitalizing horror franchises.
Fans will need to wait until April 17, 2026, for the film to be released in theaters.
