New Xbox Series X Exclusive Is 2025’s First Flop

2025 is already four months old, and it’s been quite a smooth-sailing year until recently. Just this week, Xbox Game Studios unveiled their exclusive console game for the Xbox Series X – South of Midnight. If you haven’t heard about it, that’s understandable given the lukewarm response and low player engagement that seem to surround the game according to various data sources. Despite being an Xbox Game Studios production, the reception has been somewhat mixed, with some calling it underwhelming.

Hey there! I’ve been checking out the gaming scene lately, and it seems like South of Midnight, this fresh release from Xbox Game Studios that dropped just a few days ago, isn’t getting as much love as I expected. Given its high-profile launch and Xbox marketing muscle behind it, I figured it would be in the top spots, but surprisingly, it’s only the 7th most played game on Xbox Game Pass right now. Games like Asphalt Legends Unite and Commandos Origins, which aren’t exactly household names, are currently outranking it.

The Steam player figures are particularly concerning, considering that the game is part of Xbox Game Pass. Granted, it might not be a blockbuster hit on Steam due to its inclusion in the subscription service. However, we would hope for a more substantial peak concurrent user count than the mere 1,411 players experienced. This is disappointing, especially when compared to one of the most underperforming games of the generation, Redfall, which managed to attract 6,124 concurrent players. The number of players this weekend might increase slightly, but based on current data, there’s not much optimism for a significant boost.

It’s plain as sunshine that no one is playing South of Midnight, but it can boast of critical acclaim, can’t it? Actually, it doesn’t. Despite not being a critical flop like it has been commercially, the game only holds a 77 on Metacritic. And this score is inflated due to some perfect reviews. Usually, games with a Metacritic score in the 70s don’t receive perfect scores. Without these exceptional reviews, its score would probably be even lower.

To put it simply, while users on Steam have given the game mostly favorable ratings, feedback from the Microsoft Store and Metacritic isn’t as positive. However, overall, the game has received an acceptable response. The problem is, unfortunately, the game doesn’t seem to be attracting many players.

Currently, Compulsion Games has launched three games, but none of them have been successful financially. The first game was Contrast in 2013, followed by We Happy Few in 2018. Interestingly, South of Midnight is receiving better reviews than both previous titles; however, it’s a less significant contribution compared to We Happy Few in terms of contemporary impact. As a result, it wouldn’t be unforeseen if the Canadian studio were to shut down due to Xbox.
