The Shocking Reason the Doctor Searched for Belinda in Doctor Who!

Warning: Contains spoilers for The Robot Revolution, now available on BBC iPlayer.

The latest series of Doctor Who started off in an unusual way, as Doctor Ncuti Gatwa was already a Time Lord embarking on a quest when the Robot Revolution commenced.

On modern-day Earth, he reaches the hospital where Belinda Chandra, or Varada Sethu as she is known, works. He begins his search for the nurse, coming close to her several times but just managing to miss her each time.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I found myself following the Doctor’s footsteps, racing against time to reach Belinda’s home only to discover she had been abducted by androids. Hot on their heels in the TARDIS, I chased the robots’ vessel to their distant planet. However, a temporal rift ensnared me, causing an unexpected leap six months into the past – putting me on Missbelindachandra One before Belinda and her android abductors even arrived!

While biding his time as Earth’s foremost historian, the Doctor joins forces with a group of rebels to combat the mechanical invaders and liberate Belinda. However, one may wonder, what prompted him to search for her initially?

He shares with Belinda, in a mysterious manner, “I’ve heard about you from another source – it’s quite a complex tale and I need to be mindful of the sequence of events.” Adding, “However, they mentioned your name and hinted at your significance.

So, who told the Doctor about Belinda and tasked him with finding her?

The solution could be found at the conclusion of The Robot Revolution – during the last part of the episode, Belinda triggers a strong response when her star token comes into contact with another identical token (which apparently came to be in the hands of the robots sometime in their future, then was moved back thousands of years by the time fissure and used as the basis for the civilization of Missbelindachandra One).

To protect Belinda from the peril of having two identical objects coexist in the same place – a paradoxical situation – the Doctor steps in, using his distinctive Time Lord body structure to stop her from disappearing.

He seems to be interwoven with Belinda’s past, as he himself puts it: “I moved swiftly through every aspect of your life, much like a fast-moving projectile. You and I, our connection stretches back for quite some time.

From this conversation, it seems clear that at that specific instance, the current doctor was somehow sent back in time, allowing him to inform his earlier self about Belinda and her significance.

In this instance, the event isn’t depicted visually, but theoretically speaking, it might shed light on his anxiety regarding “timelines.” He may have been aware, in theory, that his future self was the one who instigated the quest for Belinda.

Or are we yet to discover the identity of the man who shared this conversation with the Doctor?

Once more, to echo the Doctor’s words, “there remains a touch of enigma unsolved” – we’re yet to uncover how the robots came to have the star certificate, why the TARDIS can’t journey back to Earth on 24th May 2025, or why Belinda bears such a striking physical resemblance to her descendant Mundy Flynn (portrayed by Sethu in the 2024 episode Boom).

It’s intriguing to note that up until now, the Doctor has always called his spacecraft his “spaceship” around Belinda instead of using the term “TARDIS”. That raises a question: How did she learn the term “TARDIS”?

There’s a chance they discussed something privately that explains this, or it might simply be an inconsistency in continuity. However, is there a possibility there’s something more to it? Could Belinda have some secret understanding of the universe that seems implausible?

One theory could be that Belinda might unknowingly be serving as a herald for a deity from the Pantheon of Discord, similar to how Susan Twist was last season or how Harriet Arbinger is with UNIT.

In my view, this theory sheds light on why Mundy and Belinda appear strikingly similar – akin to the diverse roles portrayed by Susan Twist last year. Moreover, it suggests that her familiarity with the TARDIS mirrors Mrs. Flood’s (Anita Dobson), another character who seems to recur every week in various situations. Could it be possible that she, too, is a forerunner of the Pantheon?

The Doctor seems to believe, Bel, that our destinies are intertwined, hinting at deeper connections yet to be explored as the story unfolds further.

On the following Saturday, the 19th of April, Doctor Who resumes at 7:15 PM on BBC One. In the United Kingdom, fresh episodes will be accessible from 8 AM on Saturdays on BBC iPlayer. For those outside the UK, the series can be found on Disney+.
