Doctor Who Shocker: Earth Shattered, Belinda Can’t Return Home – What Happened?

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who – The Robot Revolution.

Let’s hop aboard the TARDIS once more, for Doctor Who’s season 15 is underway with “The Robot Revolution”! Already, there are many puzzles waiting to be explored!

Introducing our latest companion, Belinda Chandra, or Varada Sethu, who seems unfazed by the Doctor’s antics. Moreover, she appears to have prior knowledge of the TARDIS, leading us to wonder if there might be more to her background than initially apparent.

Additionally, we encountered Mrs. Flood once more, played by Anita Dobson. However, she promptly departed when the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, came close to discovering her. Furthermore, we were acquainted with the robots from Missbelindachandra One and the ominous AI Generator.

Here’s everything you need to know about how The Robot Revolution ended.

Doctor Who – The Robot Revolution ending explained: Why can’t Belinda go home?

On May 24th, 2025, it appears that an as yet undisclosed force is preventing The Doctor and Belinda from making a landing on Earth.

In simpler terms, Belinda declines joining the Doctor on his journeys, instead requesting a ride back home. The Doctor consents, but it appears that the TARDIS is experiencing difficulties returning to the exact spatial-temporal location where it had initially taken her.

Belinda wonders if the TARDIS’s sudden jumps are simply a part of the journey, but the reality appears far more ominous.

According to the Doctor, some unknown force may have propelled them away from Earth on their departure day. Could this mysterious entity be Mrs. Flood? Or perhaps a brand-new adversary who hasn’t been introduced yet?

He finds out that the TARDIS has transported them exactly midway between Missbelindachandra and Earth, so he announces they’ll need to travel the more extended route.

However, as the TARDIS vanishes, remnants of Earth are observed drifting in space: a London taxi, the Eiffel Tower, part of the Statue of Liberty, and numerous pieces of debris.

I, too, notice Belinda’s star diploma and mark each day from now until the 23rd of May on my calendar.

Could this imply something else? Perhaps Earth no longer exists, or is it about an alternate Earth? Might it be possible that someone is preventing the Doctor from reaching Earth on that specific day, in order to shield humanity from seeking his aid?

It certainly isn’t looking good for planet Earth – or for the Doctor and Belinda.

How did Belinda defeat the AI Generator?

In simpler terms, Belinda employed her prestigious award to trigger a time-based explosion, reducing the AI Generator into tiny particles. Later on, the friendly polishing droid picked up the debris left behind.

On Missbelindachandra One, the Doctor uncovers a temporal disruption; the boundary between this realm and Earth is fluctuating erratically. This anomaly caused Belinda to depart Earth on May 24, 2025, but due to the irregularities, the Doctor, who accompanied her, arrived six months prior to that date.

The Doctor notes that Belinda holds a single-star diploma, but the AI creator appears to possess an identical one. This implies that the robots might have acquired theirs from some point in the future.

Upon arriving on that planet, an extraordinary artifact mysteriously jumped through the temporal rift, rewinding 5,000 years and transforming into a legendary tale. Consequently, this event established Belinda as the queen of the planet!

In simpler terms, Belinda asks the Doctor if two identical items meeting at different times result in an explosion. Indeed, that’s what the Doctor describes as a “Kaboom!”.

In the episode, the Doctor holds onto Belinda’s diploma until she faces off against the AI Generator, which happens to be her former boyfriend, Alan. At the climax, he transfers the diploma using a polishing droid. And just like that, the deed is done!

The Doctor takes in the energy from the temporal blast, which propels him into a sequence spanning all of Belinda’s life.

In a different perspective, Alan transforms into something incredibly small, taking on the role of both a sperm and an egg, and then gets cleaned up by a robot polisher from the floor.

On Missbelindachandra One, the conflict between robots and humans has ceased, leaving behind a newfound unity where they now coexist peacefully. Their pledge is to work together towards reconstruction.

Now, the Doctor and Belinda will have to take an extended route back home, which includes a stopover in 1950s Miami!

Doctor Who continues on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday 19th April 2025.
