The long-awaited third spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory,” titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” appears to be moving closer towards becoming a real TV show. However, the path from idea to production seems to be progressing at an extremely slow pace, much like glaciers do. The proposed series revolves around Stuart Bloom, the eccentric comic book store owner played by Kevin Sussman, and several other quirky characters who were regulars on the original CBS sitcom. Despite positive feedback from Warner Bros. Television CEO Channing Dungey regarding the script’s humor and creativity, fans are left wondering: What’s causing the delay? As they anxiously wait to find out if they can return to the world of Pasadena’s beloved nerds, the sluggish development process has left many puzzled.
In an extensive chat with Deadline, Dungey provided some insight into the progress of the spinoff, revealing that Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady have been diligently working on new scripts. “We’ve had a peek at some drafts in the studio, and we’ve discussed creative ideas with Max,” she added, expressing optimism for positive updates in the near future.
Dungey’s enthusiasm is strengthened by the caliber of the scripts she’s encountered, which she characterizes as “innovative,” “imaginative,” and crucially, extremely amusing. Interestingly, the cast recently gathered for an unofficial table read of the first few episodes last month, as disclosed in a post on Instagram by John Ross Bowie, who portrays Sheldon’s adversary Barry Kripke.
Despite the promising indications, it’s yet to be confirmed if Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will get a series order from Max. This is somewhat surprising, considering the existing fan base and the success of previous spin-offs from The Big Bang Theory universe, including Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
A portion of the delay could be due to the difficulty in creating a captivating plot centered on secondary characters, as Sussman’s Stuart became popular among fans during the original series, but he, Kripke, Denise (played by Lauren Lapkus), and Bert (portrayed by Brian Posehn) were not the main figures.
Coming up with an appropriate perspective for a fresh series featuring these characters might pose a challenge, especially considering that the main cast from “The Big Bang Theory” is not part of it.
Dungey hints at potential guest appearances without completely committing, stating, “I might never rule it out entirely,” while also expressing their current enthusiasm and concentration on the main characters of the spin-off, who have exciting storylines ahead.
Additionally, it’s important to consider the timing factor. Max might be deliberately waiting for a more opportune moment before releasing The Big Bang Theory spinoff. This could be because they want a better understanding of how it aligns with their broader programming plan and release calendar, which is already packed with other significant projects such as the highly anticipated Harry Potter series. In essence, they may be carefully planning the best time to introduce another big hit from The Big Bang Theory catalog.
Despite every exciting development, the excitement grows as we near the release of “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe“. The talented team behind it promises a richer exploration of some of “Big Bang Theory“‘s most fascinating secondary characters. As Dungey and Warner Bros. refine the idea, awaiting approval from Max, fans are left speculating about the mischief in store for Stuart’s universe – and how much longer they must wait to uncover the answers.
