Struggles in Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #1
Fire and Ice have had a challenging time recently, and their worlds are disrupted even more in the first installment of Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over. Originally, they were among those fortunate enough to recover their powers following Amanda Waller’s theft in Absolute Power, but there was a twist – instead of regaining their own powers, they found themselves with each other’s.
In this issue, we witness them grappling with these unexpected changes. However, things take an unexpected turn reminiscent of the movie Freaky Friday, escalating the chaos to unprecedented levels. Readers beware: Spoilers for Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #1 lie ahead if you haven’t read the issue yet.
The combination of their unique powers has presented difficulties for both heroes, with the distinctive nature of these powers serving as a recurring theme in the comic. Ice’s powers revolve around creation, while Fire’s powers are more destructive, leading to conflicts when they attempt to use their abilities together.
Fire is deeply upset about losing control of their powers and is determined to find a solution. To distract themselves, Fire invites Black Canary, Dr. Light, and Zatanna over for a gathering. Later on, it becomes clear that Fire had asked Zatanna if she could restore their abilities, but she found it impossible.
The atmosphere is lively and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, with Zatanna and Zach dominating the karaoke session. Ice, encouraged by the fire’s gentle nudge, eventually decides to participate too. Meanwhile, the fire takes advantage of this moment to rummage through Zatanna’s enchanted hat in search of an item that could be useful.
Fire discovers various artifacts, weapons, a stray eyeball, and eventually, a Monkey’s Paw. She fastens the accompanying bracelet and utters, “I wish for Tora and me to regain our true abilities.” Zatanna and their companions perceive this and hasten towards her with the intention of halting it; however, they arrive too late, and Fire is enveloped in a burst of magical energy.
Despite the explosion, nothing seems to have altered. However, Zatanna reprimands Fire for meddling with magical artifacts, as they can be very hazardous. In response, Fire retorts, “Are these objects more perilous than Ice and I wandering around like this? I highly doubt it. This is far worse than being pointless. We’ve turned into a Risk, Z,” before storming out of the bar.
Later on, we find Charlie and Fire lying in bed together. However, when Fire steps into view, it’s actually Ice. This surprises Charlie, and she’s confused about what’s going on. After checking herself in the mirror, Charlie realizes that her body has been swapped with Ice due to the Monkey’s Paw wish. It seems that the wish was granted, but the powers were returned to their original bodies, which resulted in a swap of identities as well. This only adds to the confusion and complications that already existed.
