Nintendo has consistently delivered their top-tier franchises to the masses through their systems over the years, earning immense respect for titles like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon. Each new console offers fans an opportunity to explore something novel within these series or discover a brand-new Nintendo game leveraging cutting-edge technology. Last week, Nintendo enthusiasts were treated to a comprehensive preview of the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing glimpses of Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, but left some disgruntled due to its debatable tech demo title, Nintendo Switch 2: Welcome Tour, priced at $9.99.
The proposed pricing for games on the Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked a great deal of discussion and controversy. This debate has been intensified by recent tariff rulings in the U.S., which may cause the console’s price to increase as well. Traditionally, Nintendo has been known for creating affordable family-friendly games. However, when the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour game is released in June, consumers will have to pay for it, and truthfully, they shouldn’t have to.
This doesn’t uniquely highlight Switch 2’s ability to present top console features in a single game, as this has been effectively achieved with PlayStation and Team Asobi’s Astro Bot and Astro’s Playroom titles. However, the issue arises because similar demo games have been free before. For instance, when I received the Nintendo Wii for Christmas, the first game we played together was Wii Sports, which cleverly encouraged players, such as myself, to approach sports in a fresh way using the new console. Remarkably, Wii Sports was included with the Wii console at no extra cost (thanks to the determination of former Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime). This game offered an immersive and instructive experience, demonstrating the capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. While Wii Sports Resort showcased the Wii MotionPlus feature, it came bundled with the accessory.
After the introduction of the Wii U, the most sought-after bundle included a game called “Nintendo Land,” featuring twelve mini-games inspired by Nintendo’s beloved franchises. This game was designed to showcase the console’s capabilities in an enjoyable manner without feeling like a tech demo. However, with the launch of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo took a different approach with “1-2-Switch,” which sold well initially but left some users feeling let down due to its $50 price tag. Fans were hoping for an included game on the first day without having to buy one separately, and they are disappointed to see this happening again with “Welcome Tour.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that the Nintendo Switch 2: Welcome Tour seems more like a technical walkthrough than an exciting game. It’s intriguing to learn about the console’s inner workings, but it feels like reading an instruction manual instead of diving into an entertaining experience. Unfortunately, the presentation doesn’t seem to be doing much for its marketing, and the gameplay, from what I’ve seen, doesn’t look engaging enough to justify the price tag. After all, who can forget the free fun we had with games like Wii Sports that came bundled with the console? A tour might not be the most welcoming approach when it comes to an activity-based game that truly showcases what the console is capable of.
As a dedicated gamer and a loyal fan of Nintendo, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of a new project that could potentially cater to my preferences. However, I understand that not everyone may share the same enthusiasm for this kind of game. Regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, I sincerely hope that if such a title is ever included with the console, it would offer an exceptional gaming experience that lives up to the high standards set by Nintendo over the years.
While I appreciate the efforts put into the Nintendo Switch 2: Welcome Tour, as a gamer, I might find myself drawn more towards other games instead, which isn’t ideal for Nintendo. After all, we, the fans, always look forward to experiencing the best from this legendary company.
