A creator who previously worked for Weekly Shonen Jump is being given another chance with a new series, four years since their last one was abruptly terminated before it could fully gain momentum. Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine stands as one of Japan’s most competitive publications, not just because renowned franchises like “My Hero Academia”, “One Piece”, and “Jujutsu Kaisen” become global icons, but also due to the numerous other series that don’t quite reach those heights. Many of these projects don’t even get past the first 20 chapters before being dropped from the magazine because of waning interest.
Several of these manga series were terminated prematurely, just as they were gaining momentum, making the cancellations particularly painful given the potential they showed. A notable example from recent years is Yuki Kawaguchi’s The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood, which ended after just 18 chapters. However, this creator is set to return with a new series this coming Spring, offering another opportunity for success.
The Hunter’s Guild Creator Returns to Shonen Jump
Based on an observation made by @WSJ_manga on X, it has been announced that Yuki Kawaguchi will be back with a fresh series for Shonen Jump, titled “Tomoshibi no Hotel,” within a few weeks. This news is significant since the abrupt termination of The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood, one of the most regrettable early cancellations in recent years, left many fans wanting more. The manga offered a unique twist on fairy tales with intriguing character and monster designs, but its world was barely developed before it was abruptly halted due to insufficient reader interest in Japan.
Due to an unexpected early termination, The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood concluded its 18-chapter journey. However, the series’ creator, Yuki Kawaguchi, found the situation surprisingly entertaining. The finale of Red Hood didn’t shy away from satirizing its premature cancellation and the unfulfilled story it held. On a bittersweet note, this marks the end of an era, but we eagerly await Kawaguchi’s fresh take on a new narrative.
Will This New Series Have a Better Chance With Shonen Jump?
The present scene in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is significantly altered compared to when The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood was first published in 2021. Series that were once cornerstones, such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, have concluded (with numerous others now nearing their ends), leaving Shueisha to provide more room for creators to develop their narratives in search of the next wave of franchises that could sustain the magazine going forward.
Despite the intense competition in Shonen Jump magazine, it’s been some time since a series concluded with less than 20 chapters, allowing them to develop and gain popularity among fans. Hopefully, this means that Kawaguchi’s new series might have a greater chance of lasting longer this time around, as opposed to being canceled prematurely before reaching chapter 20.
