Bungie’s revamped version of their classic game, Marathon, is coming back as an extraction shooter on September 23rd, according to the company’s announcement on Saturday. However, during a Marathon preview event, they hinted at the game’s release earlier than September. In fact, on April 23rd, both new and old players will have the opportunity to test the game during an alpha playtest. Registration for the alpha is currently open, although it seems that many Marathon fans are having a tough time getting in so far.

During the same event, it was disclosed that participants can join the game’s Discord server to locate a link where they can register their details to be eligible for the alpha testing phase. Bungie clarified that access keys for the alpha won’t be distributed through the Twitch stream, so those who couldn’t watch the event should still have an opportunity to participate.

The truth is, the Discord will only function if it’s up and running, which unfortunately isn’t the case at the moment. It seems like an overwhelming number of people trying to access the Discord simultaneously for the alpha launch might have caused the service interruption. Multiple attempts to join the server only got me as far as the bot verification process, but a message soon followed stating that the server is currently offline.
Signing up through Discord is only a potential consideration for the alpha phase, implying there’s a possibility you won’t be selected. However, it appears there may be additional paths to access the alpha. Some content creators hinted at having keys available before the official announcement, but this is largely dependent on chance.
The initial closed testing phase for “Marathon” commences on April 23rd. The game itself is set to launch on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms by September 23rd.
