Disney Lorcana and Star Wars Unlimited Reveal New Card Bans

Disney’s Lorcana and Star Wars: Unlimited are two highly sought-after trading card games currently dominating the market. Interestingly enough, both games have recently prohibited fresh cards from competitive gameplay – a first for Lorcana, while Star Wars: Unlimited has added a few more cards to its suspension list, bringing the total to four within the game at this point. The latest bans in Disney’s Lorcana and Star Wars: Unlimited are now active, and you can find all the specifics on the suspended and banned cards, along with reasons for their removal from competitive play, detailed below.

Initially, let’s delve into Disney Lorcana, a game where they’ve restricted two specific cards – Hiram Flaversham – Toymaker and Fortisphere. However, these cards remain in the game, so you can still incorporate them when playing with friends or family. But, during Disney Lorcana Challenge events or tournaments that utilize the Core Constructed Format, these cards should be excluded from play.

Flaversham is a 4-cost character with a 1/6 stat line and possesses the Artificer ability. This skill triggers whenever Flaversham quests, allowing you to discard one of your items to draw two new cards. The Fortisphere item comes equipped with two unique abilities. Firstly, it boasts the Resourceful trait, which lets you draw a card when it is played. Secondly, Extract of Steel, an ability that can be activated for 1 cost, allows you to discard the item and bestow the Bodyguard status on one of your characters until the beginning of your next turn.

Elaine Chase, the Chief Marketing Officer for Trading Card Games at Ravensburger, explained that while no card is initially created with the intention of not being used in competition, they felt it was necessary to make changes to maintain a dynamic and engaging game experience. To avoid repetitiveness or monotony from recurring strategies, the TCG design team at Ravensburger made the tough decision, ensuring the overall health and excitement of the game. They consider bans as a last resort, employing them only when they can enhance competitive play.

Transitioning to Star Wars Unlimited, three cards have been temporarily removed from the premier format: Triple Dark Raid (Shadows of the Galaxy, 194), Jango Fett (Twilight of the Republic, 16), and DJ (Shadows of the Galaxy, 213). Fantasy Flight Games provided a detailed analysis on how these cards influence gameplay and why they’re being removed now that Jump to Lightspeed has been released. Initially, Triple Dark Raid was a rewarding but dangerous card, but it has since become one of the most potent damage dealers in the game. The introduction of new elements in Jump To Lightspeed disrupted the Vehicle Unit Pool and amplified Triple Dark Raid’s destructive potential with Devastator pulls. With the card proving to be a dominant force in the top 8 decks at the most recent Sector Qualifier, it was decided to temporarily ban it.

The upcoming card is Jango Fett as the Leader, and the primary reason for this dominance lies in two key aspects. Initially, nearly half of the Top 8 decks employing Triple Dark Raid also featured Jango Fett as their Leader. Secondly, Jango’s unique ability to tire enemy units when active on the battlefield, combined with his high health, makes him a formidable opponent to defeat.

The team concluded that these two cards should be temporarily withdrawn because they share some strategies with Triple Dark Raid involving Boba Fett. Similarly, Jango Fett is potent enough on his own without the need for Triple Dark Raid, so altering the gameplay wouldn’t make a significant difference. Therefore, it was decided that these cards should not be factored into the game anymore.

In simpler terms, DJ’s card has been temporarily banned due to an unexpected feature that allows him to grab resources effortlessly. The developers didn’t want to modify the card itself, but since DJ significantly influences opponents’ playstyles and is hard to get rid of, they chose to take him out of the game. This move is also intended to balance Han Solo’s power level, though they believe that even after this adjustment, Han Solo will remain a powerful deck in the competitive environment.

In summary, the team mentioned that since Force plays a significant role in the forthcoming Legends of the Force set in July, they plan to keep an eye on cards from earlier sets that have Force characteristics and are stronger than expected. They don’t intend to make adjustments immediately, but if they identify any cards that become excessively powerful, they will respond promptly.
