The brand-new exclusive game for the Xbox Series X, developed by Xbox Game Studios, can be downloaded for free not only by owners of Xbox Series X and S consoles but also by Xbox One users. Unlike some supposedly “free” Xbox deals, this one doesn’t require an Xbox Game Pass subscription. This week, Xbox Game Studios unveiled one of their larger 2025 games, South of Midnight, developed by Compulsion Games, a studio renowned for creating We Happy Few. However, this fresh release from Xbox Game Studios hasn’t been well-received by Xbox enthusiasts eagerly anticipating it. Regrettably, the game isn’t a standout title from Xbox Game Studios and, as of now, it appears to be the first significant flop of the year, with minimal players engaging with it.
Players who’ve tried the latest Xbox game have singled out its art direction as being exceptional, with some even calling it stunning. This, along with impressive lighting effects, makes the game visually appealing. Interestingly, Compulsion Games and Xbox recently released a fresh dynamic background for the game that’s available for free. However, it’s important to note that this new artwork is the box art for the game, which seems less vibrant compared to the game’s actual graphics.
Additionally, similar to the moving backdrops from Xbox’s past, you might need to strain your eyes to spot the dynamic aspect of this background. Initially, it may appear as if it’s a static theme, but upon closer inspection, even after multiple glances, you can notice that it’s not quite stationary. However, the dynamic element is quite subtle, and it’s only when you watch the YouTube video below that you can see the crows in the background subtly moving around.
Although anyone using Xbox can access this background for free, the game “South of Midnight” must be purchased separately. Whether you’re on Xbox consoles or Steam, the game will set you back $40. However, it is included in an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Keep in mind that Xbox Game Pass Ultime is the priciest tier at $20 per month.
It’s not clear whether this free item is an ongoing deal or a temporary one. However, all the dynamic backgrounds launched during the Xbox Series X period have remained accessible, implying they could be permanent downloads. Yet, Microsoft hasn’t provided any clarification regarding this matter.
