Marvel Comics has been experimenting with various romantic connections between popular characters since its inception. Some bonds have stood the test of time, while many others fluctuate over time. Not every romance is destined to be as enduring as Sue and Mr. Fantastic or as steady as Rogue and Gambit. Fans often discover new pairings they become deeply invested in. Let’s discuss one such endearing duo – She-Hulk and Thor. Here are some compelling reasons for our fondness of this ship, going beyond just their amusing chemistry.
For several decades, both Thor and She-Hulk have established themselves as characters with a distinct reputation. To put it frankly, they’ve had difficulty maintaining lasting relationships. Nonetheless, during Jason Aaron’s 2018 stint on the Avengers, an unexpected spark ignited between them, and we’re far from ready to forget about this intriguing connection.
Thor and She-Hulks (Brief) Relationship
It was only natural to expect some interesting interactions when Thor and She-Hulk joined forces on the Avengers team. At first, they each had their own tasks to attend to. The hints of a romantic connection between them started in issue #8 of the Avengers comic. As the story unfolded, there were several humorous moments as these two characters seemed to run into each other quite frequently at Avengers Mountain. Many fans may have assumed that this was the extent of their relationship, but it’s understandable to think so.
In issue #11 of the Avengers comic, Thor asked Jane (Jen) out on a date. The date was less than perfect since Thor took her to the Savage Land for beer and dinosaur fights. This left Jen feeling unimpressed, leading her to suspect that Thor was only attracted to her Hulk side due to her past. However, to her credit, Jen brought up her concerns with Thor, who tried to console her in a sweet but awkward manner. Later on, they officially acknowledged their relationship in Empyre: Fallout Fantastic Four #1. Unfortunately, this move might have marked the start of their eventual breakup.
In essence, this relationship didn’t have many additional details to share due to the sudden arrival of “The War of the Realms,” keeping them occupied but distant from each other. Marvel Comics never officially announced their breakup; instead, it seemed to take a backseat in the narrative. However, there have been some awkward encounters since then, such as an uneasy exchange in “Sensational She-Hulk #9” where they stumble through a hurried dialogue before parting ways. In the following issue, Thor sent a casual text (“Are you around?”), which She-Hulk chose to ignore, given that she was already involved in a new relationship at that time.
Where To Go From Here?
To put it simply, it seems extremely improbable that She-Hulk and Thor will reunite in the future. Their past relationship has ended, with Marvel choosing not to pursue it further. Currently, She-Hulk is dealing with personal issues involving Jack of Hearts, while Thor is immersed in a new adventure. As for She-Hulk’s series, it has concluded, and we have no idea when her story or love life might take a significant turn. It’s unlikely that the MCU will rekindle their romantic connection, but fans can still hope for something exciting.
What is it about the relationship between She-Hulk and Thor that we find so appealing? It’s not just their comical, clumsy, and endearingly unusual chemistry, but also the way it evolved from a humorous gag to something more heartfelt. Their shared romantic pasts create a unique connection, as if they truly understand one another at a deep level.
Beyond all else, there’s a profound reason for the affection towards this vessel. In essence, the bond between Thor and She-Hulk shares similarities with why his relationship with Jane Foster ultimately didn’t succeed. Jen possesses intelligence, worldliness, and wisdom – traits that attracted Thor to Jane. However, what sets Jen apart is her lengthy career as a superhero. She’s weathered countless challenges, enabling her to comprehend Thor’s heroic side in a manner only an experienced hero can.
It’s worth noting that while Jane has since become a superhero, this transformation occurred after their separation.
Moreover, if there’s anyone who could empathize with Thor’s dual roles as a hero and the ruler of Asgard, it would be Jen. For decades, she’s strived to strike a balance between her legal profession and her superhero duties. Indeed, it occurs to me that they might benefit from sharing strategies on this front.
