Ahsoka Season 2 Must Revisit Kanan Jarrus’s Legacy Through Ezra

Many Star Wars fans eagerly awaited the premiere of Star Wars: Ahsoka on Disney+, as Ahsoka Tano has been a beloved character since her introduction in the 2008 animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Her story didn’t end with The Clone Wars, however. In fact, Ahsoka played an essential role in the subsequent animated series, Star Wars Rebels. When Rebels concluded, it became apparent that Ahsoka’s journey was far from finished, as she and Sabine Wren embarked on a quest to find their missing comrade, Ezra Bridger. Ahsoka continues the narrative from where Rebels left off, but reveals that Ahsoka and Sabine had a falling out during their search for Ezra.

In the end, Ahsoka and Sabine accomplished their task by returning Ezra from his exile to the familiar expanse of the Star Wars galaxy. However, it’s been over a decade since we last saw him, leaving much for him to learn in Season 2 of Ahsoka. Most importantly, he’ll have to grapple with the revelation that his cherished mentor, Kanan Jarrus, is still alive – albeit through his son, Jacen, who is the offspring of Kanan and Hera Syndulla.

Why Kanan Jarrus’s Impact on the Galaxy Is so Significant

Although Kanan’s son could potentially uphold his father’s legacy, it won’t be feasible without Ezra. It was Kanan who first discovered Ezra on Lothal, his home planet, in the series Rebels. He saw not only his potential as a rebel but also sensed his ability with the Force. Taking him under his tutelage right away, Kanan nurtured Ezra much like Depa Billaba had trained him before Order 66 disrupted his education and forced him into hiding.

As time went by, the relationship between Kanan and Ezra grew stronger and deeper. They both learned from each other in ways that were vital for these once isolated Jedi. By taking Ezra under his wing, Kanan also brought him into the fold of the Ghost crew – Hera Syndulla, the captain of the Ghost and future General of the Rebel Alliance; Chopper, Hera’s loyal but unpredictable droid; Zeb Orrelios, a Lasat warrior who believes he is the last of his kind; and Sabine Wren, a young Mandalorian artist who once worked for the Empire as a weapons expert before discovering their deceit. Ezra, an orphan since the age of 7, lived on the streets and struggled to trust anyone or find a true home until he met Kanan and his newfound family aboard the Ghost.

As a cinephile engrossed in the mysteries of the Force, I found myself initially hesitant about my capacity to mold a young Jedi like Ezra, given my own incomplete training. However, as our sessions progressed, I felt a deeper connection with the Force and my true destiny as a Jedi. It was during this journey that I chose to give up my life for the safety of the Ghost crew, passing on the mantle of a Jedi to Ezra. Little did I know, my beloved Hera carried our unborn child – another potential successor in the Force. Tragically, I departed this world without ever knowing about our impending parenthood, leaving behind a legacy that would continue through our son.

Ezra’s Return Will Continue Kanan’s Legacy

As a film enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the storyline of “Ahsoka.” In this tale, young Jacen seems to embody an adventurous spirit and a knack for flying, much like his mother. Notably, he takes over the co-pilot seat once occupied by his father, hinting at his own potential strength. The series also subtly suggests that Jacen possesses a strong connection with the Force, although Hera has kept secret the fact that his father was a powerful Jedi.

Given Kanan’s tragic fate, it is understandable why Hera might be reluctant to reveal too much about being a Jedi to her son, fearing the same consequences may befall him. However, with Ezra’s return and reunion with Hera, it seems that Ahsoka’s former padawan, Kanan, would be the ideal mentor for Jacen as he embarks on his Jedi training.

It’s quite possible that Ezra, who possesses a unique connection with the Force similar to Kanan, might mentor his former master’s son, Jacen, during Season 2 of Ahsoka. This is especially likely considering Jacen’s exceptional Force sensitivity was prominently showcased in the first season. In fact, Jacen could perceive and feel Ahsoka battling Anakin in the World Between Worlds – a realm not bound by reality, time, or space, generated by the Force itself. Since Ezra has also ventured into this plane of existence, he would be an ideal Jedi to tutor Jacen on the enigmatic aspects of the Force.

In Episode 5 of Ahsoka, when Anakin reappears to guide his former apprentice, he emphasizes the significance of their master-apprentice bond by saying, “Ahsoka, everything I know is within you. It’s like a legacy that gets passed down, just as my knowledge came from my master and his from his. You are a part of this ongoing tradition.

If Ezra accepts Jacen as his apprentice, it means he can share all the knowledge and skills he gained under Kanan’s tutelage, effectively preserving Kanan’s teachings and Jedi ways for a new generation – a legacy that sadly, Kanan never got to meet in person.
