Glancing at the initial portrayal of cosmic space police in Absolute Universe’s Absolute Green Lantern #1, fans find themselves captivated by the startling transformations to the established lore of the power-wielding guardians. The Green Lanterns, traditionally recognized as universe protectors, are now portrayed as hunted entities instead. Series writer Al Ewing has hinted that
So far, it’s unclear if any other Lantern Corps members will show up in the Absolute Universe, as only the first issue has been released. However, this doesn’t stop us from speculating and drawing some educated assumptions based on what we know so far.
Yellow Lanterns
Among all other Corps, aside from the Green Lanterns, it’s highly probable that you’ll see the Yellow Lanterns first. They were the initial emotion beyond will to possess their own ring, and their power, which stems from instilling great terror, seems fitting for the Absolute Universe. Given that the Absolute Green Lantern storyline revolves around them being hunted instead of policing, it’s plausible that the Yellow Lanterns could be the ones doing the hunting – seeking to maintain control through fear.
As for that topic, I propose an idea: Mechanical Warriors called the Yellow Lantern Manhunters. These robots are among the Green Lantern Corps’ most formidable adversaries and have often allied with the Yellow Lanterns. Can you imagine anything more terrifying than a militaristic robot force controlling the cosmos? Furthermore, considering Hal Jordan’s past relationship with Sinestro, the first Yellow Lantern, and his current state of fear-induced distress, it would be intriguing to see Sinestro reappear as a friend who later becomes an enemy.
In this version, I’ve made minor adjustments to improve clarity and readability while preserving the original meaning.
Red Lanterns
In the Absolute Universe, fueled by unbridled fury, the Red Lanterns undergo a dramatic transformation. Assuming there’s an oppressive force ruling over the universe, portraying the Red Lanterns as revolutionaries could make for an intriguing twist. These oppressed beings would harness their rage into a powerful, destructive tool as they wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the dominant powers.
However, maintaining the horror essence of the story, in this universe, the Red Lantern rings might not merely replace your heart but transform you into a grotesque combatant. Your blood would metamorphose into molten lava, and you’d become an uncontrollable tempest of wrath until your ring exhausts its power or your body disintegrates under the onslaught of your own ferocity.
Wearing a red ring would essentially set a timer for the end of your existence. Yet, until that clock strikes zero, you’d embody a monster in every sense of the word.
Orange Lanterns
In the grand DC Universe, there exists only one Orange Lantern and its accompanying ring, a chilling artifact that overpowers its bearer, driving them into an insatiable greed, unable to relinquish even the smallest of possessions. Each life taken by the lantern’s wielder is absorbed into the lantern itself. However, the Absolute Universe has the potential to take this concept to a whole new level of terror. Instead of being solely in the possession of one ring or wielder, the Absolute Orange Lantern could resemble a contagion rather than an object.
This malevolent force would radiate out from a central battery, infecting entire planets with an orange light. Over time, it would consume these planets completely, leaving nothing behind but emptiness. The lantern would then move on to devour the next planet in its path, exhibiting a core essence of gluttony. It might not even have a wielder at all; instead, it could project images of the people it has absorbed as a means of self-defense, should it be under attack.
Indigo Lanterns
In the primary universe, the Indigo Lanterns have an advantage over other corps in terms of horror-related skills, as they are deeply ingrained with this theme. Unlike other emotional spectrum lanterns, members of the Indigo Corps receive their rings against their will and become part of a collective consciousness dedicated to spreading empathy. In the main universe, this is a form of punishment for criminals, but in the Absolute, it could be a contagion. Unlike the Orange Lantern that destroys everything it touches, the Indigo Lanterns distribute rings to anyone indiscriminately, forcing them to perform compassionate acts, even as their bodies deteriorate from the strain and effort. In essence, you can visualize an entire corps of zombies driven by empathy, all eager to save you by recruiting you into their ranks.
Violet Lanterns
In this hypothetical scenario, let’s consider these objects as Violet Lanterns, drawing their power from love akin to Star Sapphires. Rather than having them independently or utilizing a tainted form of affection, I propose a link between these Violet Lanterns and the Red Lantern Corps. Love and rage are extreme opposites in the emotional spectrum, with love and hate frequently viewed as two sides of the same coin. Imagine that these Violet Lanterns don these rings to fight for their loved ones, yet they risk losing themselves to the overwhelming intensity of their feelings. If they fully surrender to the emotion they uphold, they might very well metamorphose into the feared Red Lanterns suggested earlier.
Blue Lanterns
As beacons of optimism, I am eagerly anticipating whether these Lanterns will find their place in the Infinite Realm. The Blue Light is often referred to as the most challenging emotion to sustain and materialize, even in a universe known for its hopefulness. Yet it’s this struggle that makes them so captivating. The essence of the Infinite Realm lies in the fact that hope must shine brighter than ever to endure, which is why I believe the Blue Lanterns won’t be discovered, but rather created. I envision their creation as a reward for standing against an immense, malevolent force, a situation unforeseen and unexpected, yet brought about by our heroes’ unwavering belief in a brighter future. They would forge the very light of hope themselves, using it to guide others around them.
White Lanterns
In simpler terms, White Lanterns are a fusion of all emotions across the universe, symbolizing all life. It’s doubtful we’ll encounter them soon, but if they do appear, it could be in response to the devastation caused by Black Lanterns or as a final showcase of the combined power of the emotional spectrum during a universal struggle for survival. A possible scenario might involve their debut at the peak of a grand event that unites all titles within the Absolute Universe, perhaps even when Darkseid makes an appearance. If and when they do make an entrance, it will be a significant and memorable one.
Black Lanterns
The Black Lanterns, symbolizing death and devoid of any light, are among the strongest Lanterns ever. I’ve saved discussing them for last since they might already exist in the vast cosmos known as the Absolute Universe. Hal Jordan has somehow acquired a black-energy hand that eliminates things near him, much like the villain Black Hand from the main universe. This raises the question if Hal has transformed into a Black Lantern himself. If he has, he must find a way to conquer his darkness to regain light within himself. If he fails, it could lead to catastrophe as this new Black Lantern energy not only kills but also seems to obliterate whatever it touches completely.
In summary, those are the primary Lantern Corps we might encounter in the Absolute Universe someday. I think it’s doubtful that less mainstream groups like the Gold Lantern from the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Ultraviolet Lanterns, or the Fractal Lanterns such as the Gray Corps will make an appearance. The Fractal Lanterns are still deeply involved in the main storyline, so their origin remains unknown. However, even if none of these Corps join forces with the Green, the Absolute Universe promises a wealth of remarkable and thrilling Lantern tales, which is always something to anticipate. And that’s certainly exciting!
