There’s much discussion about the cost of video game software, with some enthusiasts prepared to spend substantial amounts for premium collector’s editions. Not everyone has the means to do this, yet developers and publishers cater to their most dedicated fans by offering high-end luxury items. These collectible versions can sometimes double or even triple the standard game price, and some surpass that figure. A new collector’s edition for DOOM + DOOM II is being unveiled, available for purchase starting this Friday, March 18th. The cost? An eye-watering $666.66.
One classic jest regarding the game DOOM is that its dedicated fanbase has managed to make it run on unexpected devices. The humorously named “Will It Run?” edition of both DOOM and DOOM II comes with various options for gameplay. You can purchase it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox, or Steam, which is a standard method of playing the game – similar to what you’d get if you bought the regular $29.99 version. Interestingly, there’s also a handheld device modeled as a Cacodemon that plays the original DOOM, and even the packaging includes a playable, functional version of the game!
This special version of DOOM + DOOM II comes with additional items such as a levitating Cacodemon figurine on a magnetic stand, a set of trading cards, a four-tape cassette soundtrack, and a document confirming its authenticity. With its high cost, it’s uncertain how many people will buy the “Will It Run” edition, which is limited to only 666 copies, making it quite a rare collectible for DOOM enthusiasts. While it’s an interesting concept, whether the rarity justifies the cost over a new console with multiple games is something that people may argue about.
Potential buyers of the “Will It Run” version of DOOM + DOOM II should be aware that this product is still in development, and there’s no set timeline for when it will become available. Although this edition is officially licensed by Bethesda, it’s being manufactured and distributed by Limited Run Games. As experienced gamers know, this can sometimes lead to extended wait times. However, if you’re the type of DOOM fan who enjoys collector’s editions and isn’t deterred by a longer wait, the delay likely won’t be a significant factor in your decision.
If the “Will It Run” version of both DOOM and DOOM II doesn’t run out beforehand, you’ll have until May 18th at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time to pre-order either edition. The regular version of the game will also be available for purchase during this same timeframe, so if you’re looking to get a copy of DOOM + DOOM II on your preferred platform, you can do so very soon!
