*Warning – contains minor spoilers for Grace season 5 episode 2*
From the very beginning of Grace’s initial season, there has always been a certain turbulence in the relationship between Richie Campbell (portrayed by Glenn Branson) and his spouse Ari (played by Rebecca Scroggs). It hasn’t been an entirely smooth ride for them.
Currently, an additional layer of complication has surfaced in their relationship, as we learned in season 5 episode 2 that Ari is under investigation for potential negligence at her workplace, which is a nursing position.
Glenn suspects that Ari might be concealing some information from him, as there seems to be lingering tension from past instances where she wasn’t entirely truthful with him. These unresolved issues from the earlier seasons have a way of resurfacing, according to his explanation.
He suspects there might be more happening, but he can’t seem to reach her or understand what she’s thinking.
When he finally reaches her, she reveals a startling piece of news: a patient has passed away under her care, and it was due to her prescribing penicillin, which the patient’s records show they are allergic to.
In essence, she made it seem like it was by chance, as if she hadn’t meant to, and it was entirely unplanned.

Campbell further explained, “However, due to doubts arising from past experiences, he finds himself at work thinking, ‘I need to believe in her, she’s my spouse, yet, I can’t seem to fully trust.’
In essence, he presents a predicament with an ethical twist for Roy, who then allows him the space to handle the situation as he sees fit.
The situation is gradually affecting their relationship, making it clear that it will leave an impression on them. However, similar to a subplot in a movie or TV show, Ari and Glenn are dealing with the challenges of managing their work and home lives, and finding a balance between the two.
Simultaneously, Zoë Tapper, Campbell’s fellow actor portraying Cleo, expressed that narratives like Glenn’s this season are the “intriguing aspects” of the series, as it delves into the “real people hidden behind the detective persona”.
She mentioned, “You catch a peek into some of their intricate pasts, and yet they must continue to outperform to vanquish the adversaries.” She finds it fascinating from a psychological standpoint and believes it makes for an effective exploration.
Campbell noted: “We seem particularly skilled at this aspect in our series. Typically, in crime thrillers, the lead detective often carries some sort of personal baggage.
As a cinema enthusiast, I find that the character’s issues, whether they stem from alcoholism, infidelity, or other personal struggles, are constant and defining aspects of their persona. Conversely, in this film, it’s the ordinary, everyday challenges that resonate with viewers on a deeper level. These relatable experiences come in various forms, allowing audiences to genuinely connect with the narrative.
The third episode next week is sure to continue the story, with many more chances to delve deeper since the series has been given another season, extending up to its sixth.
