Fans of The Legend of Zelda series were thrilled with Nintendo‘s latest hint, revealed during their recent Switch 2-centric Direct presentation. In this announcement, Nintendo confirmed that they would be integrating GameCube games into the upcoming console through Nintendo Switch Online. One of the first titles to make its way onto the service is none other than The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, a game that has been speculated to receive a remaster or port for the Switch in recent years. Luckily, it appears that this addition to Nintendo Switch Online won’t rule out the possibility of seeing a remastered version of The Wind Waker on the rumored Switch 2 console.
During a recent Kinda Funny Games Daily broadcast, Gettys shared that he spoke with Nintendo SVP Nate Bihldorff during the Switch 2 unveiling and inquired if the release of The Wind Waker on NSO would prevent the Wii U version from being ported to future hardware. Bihldorff swiftly dismissed this notion, stating that the Switch Online version of The Wind Waker won’t affect Nintendo‘s decision to bring a remastered edition of the game to either the Switch or the Switch 2 in the future. Although this doesn’t ensure that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD will definitely appear on these systems, it does leave the door open for the possibility.
In simpler terms, the question was posed if owning The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online would prevent a potential Wii U port for the Switch 2 at some point. Bihldorff responded that all possibilities are being considered, according to Gettys’ report. While nothing is officially confirmed, there have been instances where games available on Nintendo Switch Online can be obtained in other forms, such as remakes or different versions. It’s intriguing that they didn’t rule out the possibility entirely, but instead hinted that it might not happen, but ‘never say never’, as it’s Nintendo.
For several years now, whispers and claims have persisted that Nintendo has completed remastering both “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” and “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” for the Nintendo Switch. However, despite these ports being ready, Nintendo has chosen not to make them available to the public yet. If this rumor is correct, it could suggest that Nintendo was biding its time, waiting for the launch of the Switch 2 before releasing these high-definition versions of beloved Zelda games. Whether or not this will occur is uncertain, but fans can remain optimistic as they look forward.
