It appears that Marvel’s sneak peek for Thunderbolts has fueled a popular fan speculation, suggesting Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan might be portraying Songbird. Viswanathan is now officially part of the cast as “Mel,” and she mentioned her character serves as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s right-hand woman. Since last year, some fans have hypothesized that “Mel” would actually be Melissa Gold, a cybernetically-enhanced vigilante known as Songbird. The recent TV spot released on Sunday seems to support this theory with a conspicuous piece of jewelry, although fans remain cautious about her role in the film.
The recently unveiled TV commercial on Sunday showcases several repeated shots and dialogues from earlier Thunderbolts trailers, but also includes fresh perspectives and a few new elements. A subtle modification that might go unnoticed is a close-up of Viswanathan, who ominously states, “Nobody’s coming to rescue the day.” Eagle-eyed fans swiftly noticed the necklace she’s wearing in this shot – a tiny metal charm shaped like a bird singing.
To numerous viewers, this appears to be the final piece of evidence suggesting that Viswanathan may indeed embody a Marvel Comics superhero in secret. On the other hand, certain fans are displeased by the significant shift this will bring about in Melissa Gold’s narrative. First appearing in 1979, Songbird, as depicted in the comics, was initially a troubled teenager who had run away from home and lived a life of crime. Following her technological upgrades, she was put behind bars at a young age before joining various villain teams. Eventually, she became part of the Thunderbolts‘ original roster, when they were posing as heroes while actually being villains.
Over the years, Songbird has often been part of the Thunderbolts team, shifting positions across the hero-villain divide. Although there were instances where she worked temporarily with S.H.I.E.L.D., she was neither a Fontaine employee nor an agent for the CIA. There are concerns that the Songbird in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may deviate significantly from her comic book version, as she might lack a criminal past and the rebellious streak.
As a cinephile, I must confess that the details surrounding Songbird’s presence in this film remain shrouded in mystery. It seems that the creators have chosen to keep her role and character development tightly under wraps, leaving us eager spectators guessing. However, given Fontain’s influence, it’s intriguing to ponder whether she might be working for him without entirely abandoning her rebellious essence. The possibilities are enticing, indeed!
You’ll find out more details about Mel’s part shortly. The film “Thunderbolts*” is set to premiere in U.S. cinemas this coming Friday, May 2nd.
