As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’ve just had the privilege of witnessing Ryan Coogler’s chilling masterpiece, “Sinners.” This vampire thriller is breaking records on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting an unparalleled 100% approval rating from a staggering 45 critical reviews. It’s left even the most acclaimed vampire films, like “Nosferatu,” “Let the Right One In,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” in its dust. The anticipation is palpable as we eagerly await its April 18th release date, wondering if this movie will meet the exceptionally high praise it’s been receiving. It’s a must-watch for any horror fan, and I can’t wait to see if it lives up to the hype!
Compared to other vampire films, the top rating for “Sinners” is a remarkable accomplishment. For instance, F.W. Murnau’s classic silent film “Nosferatu” boasts a 97% approval rating from 74 reviews, while “Let the Right One In,” the Swedish vampire movie, has an impressive 98% score based on 193 critics’ opinions. Taika Waititi’s unique take on vampires in “What We Do in the Shadows” earned a 96% positive response from 190 critics. Notable vampire films like “The Lost Boys,” a cult favorite, have varying levels of critical acclaim with a 75% fresh rating, and other adaptations like “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” by Francis Ford Coppola and “Interview with the Vampire” have scores of 69% and 63%, respectively. As more reviews pour in on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s possible that “Sinners‘” score might decrease slightly, but it’s unlikely to drop significantly.
In a new direction for Ryan Coogler, “Sinners” represents his debut into the chilling realm of horror. This venture underscores Coogler’s ability to adapt across various genres while preserving his unique storytelling style and recurring themes. The film’s historical backdrop offers an intriguing exploration of societal issues within the context of vampires, elements that have been praised by critics for elevating it above conventional horror movies. Building upon the critical acclaim of his previous works such as “Fruitvale Station” (94%), “Creed” (95%), “Black Panther” (95%), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (84%), “Sinners” continues Coogler’s impressive run of success in the film industry.
Sinners Could Give Warner Bros. Pictures a Major Box Office Win

Initial estimates indicate that the movie “Sinners” could bring a significant success for Warner Bros., predicting an opening weekend earnings of over $40 million domestically. This is promising news for a film with a production budget of approximately $90 million, which is usually difficult to recover during the April release window known for its challenges. Although some tracking services anticipate a more modest start in the lower $30 million range, Warner Bros. is ramping up their marketing efforts in the lead-up to the release, aiming to boost those figures as interest grows among horror fans and broader audiences.
As a movie critic, I foresee “Sinners” marking Coogler’s most impressive non-Marvel debut yet, outperforming the initial three-day weekend earnings of 2015’s “Creed,” which amassed $29.6 million domestically before concluding with a total of $42.1 million over its extended five-day Thanksgiving run. More notably, a strong debut for “Sinners” would offer Warner Bros. much-needed momentum after a series of underperforming releases, particularly Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction satire “Mickey 17,” which recently opened to a disheartening $19 million against its hefty budget of $118 million.
During a Q&A session for the movie, Coogler expressed that he feels exceptionally fortunate with the acting talent he’s collaborated with in his career, but this particular cast is exceptional even among the best. This is because the script wasn’t adapted from any prior work, allowing each actor to develop their characters independently. This unique freedom seems to have significantly contributed to the film’s success, as critics have widely acclaimed Coogler’s direction and Jordan’s compelling portrayal of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who encounter a chilling vampire danger upon returning home in the South.
Sinners hits theaters this Friday, April 18th.
