Sam Altman says GPT-4 “kind of sucks” as OpenAI discontinues its model for the “magical” GPT-4o in ChatGPT

Over the last several years, sophisticated AI technology, such as OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT-4 image generator, has made remarkable strides and grown increasingly capable. This groundbreaking tool has recently gained widespread attention on social media due to its creation of Studio Ghibli-inspired memes.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of GPT-4, stating it’s not up to the mark and at times even a bit awkward. He further remarked that “GPT-4 will be the most unintelligent model you’ll ever work with by a significant margin.” Altman emphasizes the importance of releasing products early and making frequent updates, which is a principle they stand behind.

It appears that OpenAI is planning to phase out GPT-4 and replace it with an updated version, GPT-4o, starting from April 30, 2025, as the main model in ChatGPT. While GPT-4 will no longer be the default option, users can still access it through OpenAI’s API.

According to OpenAI:

Direct comparisons show that [GPT-4o] outperforms GPT-4 across a variety of tasks including writing, coding, STEM subjects, and others. Recent updates have enhanced its capabilities in following instructions, problem-solving, and maintaining smooth conversations, making it the logical evolution from GPT-4.

According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the development and training of GPT-4 cost up to $100 million. Last year, they introduced GPT-4, which includes reasoning abilities across text, audio, and voice. This new model is said to be a more rapid advancement compared to its predecessor, GPT-3. As an analyst, I found it intriguing to observe the surge of interest in ChatGPT following OpenAI’s unveiling of GPT-4 and GPT-4o. Within minutes of their launch, ChatGPT added a million new users, a significant milestone achieved with the help of its eye-catching image generator.

Notably, upon the release of GPT-4o in May 2024, there was a significant surge in both revenue and downloads for ChatGPT on mobile platforms.

In a different study, it was found that as of February 2025, ChatGPT has become the most frequently used app among more than 10,500 AI tools. In comparison to Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT attracted over 52 times more daily visitors, which equates to approximately 173.3 million visits per day. To put this into perspective, the number of daily visits to ChatGPT exceeds the monthly visits to Copilot.
