*Warning – contains spoilers for Black Mirror: Bête Noire*
In simpler terms, the second episode of Black Mirror’s seventh season, titled “Bête Noire,” delves into themes of manipulation (gaslighting) and the blurred lines between what we perceive as reality and truth. It seems that Netflix is exploring these concepts in a self-reflective manner.
In this installment, I, Siena Kelly – a dedicated food researcher – find myself grappling with the notion that my world might be subtly altered due to the reappearance of an old acquaintance from school, Verity. She has returned to my life, and I can’t help but suspect that her presence may hold some significance in shaping my reality.
In one of the initial occurrences, a disagreement arises between Maria and her coworkers at their workplace regarding the name of a fried chicken chain. Since her boyfriend previously worked there and still sports a hat bearing its logo, she is certain that it was originally named Bernie’s.
Meanwhile, her coworkers maintain that it was known as Barnies, and a web search confirms their assertion. Interestingly enough, even the hat belonging to Maria’s partner has been replaced.
Later on, it’s unveiled that Verity invented a technology enabling them both to travel to different realities, where whatever she asserts has always held true.
Actually, the situation depicted earlier wasn’t consistent across all Netflix streams. Interestingly, it was discovered that two distinct versions of the episode were broadcasted – one with Bernie as the original spelling, while in another version it was Barnie.
It seems that the specific episode viewers can watch on their Netflix account is seemingly chosen at random, however, the streaming service hasn’t provided any explanation for the existence of multiple versions as of now.
However, they have used the term “bernies” on Twitter, now known as X. Previously known as Black Mirror, their account responded with “barnies”.
Apart from Kelly, the episode features Rosy McEwen portraying Verity, with Ben Bailey Smith, known as Doc Brown, taking on the role of their supervisor, Gabe.
Kelly is not the only cast member in this episode; Rosy McEwen plays Verity, and Ben Bailey Smith, or Doc Brown, appears as their manager named Gabe.
The second episode of the season, titled “Bête Noire,” is followed by a series of other episodes including “Common People,” “Hotel Reverie,” “Plaything,” “Eulogy,” and “USS Callister: Into Infinity.
Among them, the final one marks the series’ first sequel, picking up from Season 4’s USS Callister. On the other hand, Plaything brings back two characters who were previously seen in an earlier episode titled Bandersnatch.
