Although Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming PvEvP extraction shooter, is entering a market that seems almost saturated with games like Escape From Tarkov, director Joe Ziegler feels confident that it can peacefully co-exist alongside other titles in the genre. In an interview with GamesRadar, Ziegler expressed his desire to provide a refined extraction shooter experience that makes it easier for more players to enjoy this type of game.
As stated by Ziegler, Bungie is working on a new version of Marathon, with the intention of offering an innovative and captivating experience that truly delves into why you love playing other extraction shooter games. Essentially, they aim to streamline some of the rough edges commonly associated with the genre, enabling players to quickly immerse themselves in the survival storytelling aspect.
In simpler terms, Ziegler stated that a significant opportunity lies in attracting players who have tried extraction shooter games previously but found the excess elements (which we’ll call ‘cruft’) too challenging. The goal is to make the game more accessible for this group, allowing them to bypass the cruft and dive deeper into the survival narrative faster and more effectively. Essentially, they aim to deliver the tension and survival aspects of an extraction shooter without requiring players to learn a new game from scratch.
Andrew Witts, the gameplay director at Marathon, discussed plans to make their upcoming game more approachable within the genre. In an interview, he mentioned crafting a game that’s easy enough for beginners to grasp by simply handing them the controller, while still maintaining the intricate gameplay mechanics that extraction shooters are renowned for.
Witts stated, “Giving the controller to a friend and saying ‘let’s play this game’ is incredibly straightforward with our action game from Bungie. It doesn’t require much explanation to get started. In essence, you can pass on the game experience easily, fostering shared enjoyment without needing an extensive tutorial. We strive to ensure that it’s accessible for everyone, making the action-fantasy gameplay intuitive and satisfying.
In the same conversation, Ziegler clarified that Marathon won’t be a replacement for Destiny within the studio. Instead, it will primarily concentrate on its Player-versus-Environment-Player (PvEvP) gameplay design. Moreover, Ziegler suggests that Destiny’s PvE enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy activities like raids, might not find Marathon appealing. Instead, the game is being developed with fans of Bungie’s PvP content in mind.
In simpler terms, Ziegler stated that they don’t anticipate Marathon transforming into Destiny 3. Instead, their aim isn’t about creating a new product to replace Destiny 2. Rather, they believe that Destiny 2 has potential and the team working on it is diligently trying to comprehend what players desire.
If Destiny’s PvP sandbox battles get your adrenaline pumping, then let me tell you, the prospect of diving into Marathon might just take your gaming experience to new heights!
The game “Marathon” is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 23rd. For further information, please take a look at the gameplay summary. Upon its debut, it will offer three distinct maps and six different characters to play as.
