As we eagerly anticipate James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film (set to hit theaters on July 11), DC Comics is kicking off an exciting new phase for the Man of Steel with a publishing project. This isn’t just the start of a new chapter for Superman, but also a special issue of “Action Comics.” Remarkably, this launch coincides almost exactly with the day Superman first appeared in “Action Comics” #1 on April 18, 1938, and when young Clark Kent debuted as Superboy in “More Fun Comics” #101 in 1945. In the “Summer of Superman Special” #1, DC will delve into the rich history, current events, and future possibilities surrounding the Last Son of Krypton.

Starting April 16, a massive, 48-page one-shot issue (penned by Joshua Williamson, Mark Waid, and Dan Slott – key architects of the Super series) will be available for purchase. This special issue marks the beginning of a new chapter in Superman’s journey and lays the groundwork for the events unfolding across all Superman titles.

In this three-part narrative penned by Waid (from “Justice League Unlimited”) and illustrated by Jorge Jiménez (“Super Sons”), we revisit Smallville, Kansas, delving into an earlier timeline predating the “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” Here, a teenager named Clark Kent is initially introduced as Superboy, also known as the Boy of Steel. After this, he later transitions to the Man of Steel based in Metropolis. Notably, the role of Superboy has since been taken by Kon-El and later Jon Kent, Clark’s son, in more contemporary storylines.

The narrative of Waid and Jiménez focuses on a 15-year-old Clark Kent, his pet dog Krypto the Superdog, and his adolescent crush, Lana Lang, years before her marriage to John Henry Irons (Steel). In June, starting with Action Comics #1087, the creative team of Waid and artist Skylar Patridge (making her DC series debut) will steer the series back to Clark’s hometown, Smallville, on the Kent family farm. This is their first venture in an ongoing DC series.

Waid stated when unveiling the new “Action Comics” series featuring Superboy, Clark, that he begins the story with Clark discovering his superhero abilities at 15 years old. He added, “We explore what it’s like to learn to control your powers at such a young age and the struggles you face. Additionally, Skylar and I are modernizing Smallville – retaining its rural charm but making the farms more contemporary.

Apart from an innovative take on the initial Superman series, we also have new storylines coming up. Starting May 13, there’s the freshly launched Supergirl series penned by Sophie Campbell. This brings back Kara Zor-El, the Powerful, to the town of Midvale, sporting a brand-new costume designed by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. From May 21, we have the new ongoing Superman Unlimited, written by Dan Slott and illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque. Moving forward, starting June 18, there’s a five-issue series titled Krypto: Last Dog of Krypton, created by Ryan North and Mike Norton. Lastly, on June 25, we have a hardcover collection called Superman: The World, which showcases original stories that celebrate the Man of Steel from diverse cultural perspectives across the globe.
