Meet Dina: The Newest Star of The Last of Us Season 2 Revealed!

At long last, The Last of Us season 2 has arrived, bringing back Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. This time around, we join them as they grapple with the significant choice Ellie made at the conclusion of season 1.

There are also plenty of new characters in season 2, including Isabela Merced’s Dina.

In January 2024, it was officially confirmed that Isabela Merced had been added to the show’s cast. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the showrunners, expressed in a recent joint statement: “Dina is complex, radiating warmth, intelligence, wildness, humor, morality, danger, and immediate charm. Instead of spending eternity searching for an actor who naturally portrays all these qualities, we found Isabela Merced immediately.

“We couldn’t be prouder to have her join our family.”

In January 2023, The Last of Us made its debut on HBO, instantly gaining popularity and ranking as the network’s second most successful premiere following House of the Dragon.

A season two renewal was announced after only two episodes of the first season had aired.

Read on for everything you need to know about Merced’s character, Dina.

Who is Dina in The Last of Us? Isabela Merced’s character explained

In both the TV series and the original video game, Dina is Ellie’s love interest.

In the initial episode of season 2, not much detail has been given about this character. However, in The Last of Us Part II game, released in 2020, this character (whose voice actor is Shannon Woodward) is older than Ellie and falls within her early twenties.

She was raised by her older sister, Talia, after her parents died when she was very young.

According to HBO, Dina exhibits a carefree personality, but her deep affection for Ellie may face challenges due to the harshness of the environment they live in.

Actress Isabela Merced, notably recognized for her work in Transformers: The Last Knight and Madame Web, hails from the United States.

What else has Isabela Merced starred in?

Previously, Merced made an appearance as Dora in the movie “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” alongside films like “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Madame Web.

In addition, she played roles such as Lizzy in Instant Family, Hawkgirl in Superman Legacy, and Rachel in the Netflix series Sweet Girl.

The actress also bagged a small role in Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover as the voice of Ava.

Did Dina secretly appear in The Last of Us season 1?

Fans previously speculated that Dina had already appeared on the show back in season 1.

In episode 6, when I found myself among the show’s main characters, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal), we entered the community of Jackson, Wyoming. As we settled down in their cafeteria, a young girl, portrayed by Paolina Van Kleef, couldn’t help but cast curious glances at me, Ellie.

Speaking about the scene, Mazin and Druckman didn’t refute the fan theory that it could be Dina.

In Part II, a tale is narrated where Dina initially meets Ellie – this encounter bears a strong resemblance to the events unfolding in our current situation, as explained by Druckmann to Entertainment Weekly earlier.

“That doesn’t mean that that’s Dina,” Mazin added. “Doesn’t mean it’s not.”

During a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Merced was queried about the fan theory.

The star remarked, “I did catch a glimpse of that theory.” She also noted, “Her attire seems strikingly like Dina’s. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to inquire about it from Craig Mazin yet.

According to my observation and experience with Dina, it seems unlikely that she would flee. Instead, if confronted, she might ask something like, “Who are you?” asserts Merced.

As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that I believe Ellie wouldn’t instill fear in Dina. In fact, I imagine Dina standing her ground, not fleeing in terror with her head down.

Although there’s some ambiguity about whether the girl from season 1 was indeed Dina, it has been confirmed that Kleef will not be portraying her character in season 2.
