Composer Bear McCreary, recognized for crafting the music for 2018’s God of War and its follow-up, God of War Ragnarök, has opened up about his work on this series. In an interview with VGC, McCreary expressed that he feels he has accomplished what he intended with the God of War franchise at this time.
Initially, McCreary discussed his recent visit to the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective Gallery last month. He expressed his emotion upon recognizing the vast number of individuals who have contributed to the franchise over the years.
According to McCreary, we recently spent time with the cast at the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibit. The exhibit showcased artworks for each of the nine games, creating a sort of artistic pantheon. As I look around the room, I can see all the artists who have contributed to the series.
It was incredibly touching to understand the vast number of individuals who contributed, none of whom have played a primary role in every project. Instead, it seems like a collective intelligence or pool of knowledge has been passed down from the initial game.
Additionally, he discussed witnessing arrangements of his compositions displayed prominently, which brought a sense of completion to the narrative arc of Kratos as portrayed in the newer games.
As I stepped into the room, I noticed the sheet music for “God of War” (2018) and “God of War Ragnarok,” both framed and signed by Santa Monica Studios – scores that I had given as gifts. This sight brought home to me the realization that I played a part in this incredible series, he added. Even with the additional content for “God of War: Valhalla,” there’s an ending cinematic that holds special significance to me, and I was eager to score it.
Finishing the story of Kratos, from E3 2016 to Valhalla, has given me a sense of fulfillment. My part in this journey seems to be wrapped up. I feel fulfilled. I feel as if I’ve told a complete story.
He expressed that although he feels satisfied with the resolution his work on God of War provided, he remains open to contributing to future installments within the series. When asked about composing music for Amazon’s adaptation of God of War, he stated his sense of pride in his past accomplishments and mentioned that those who require him have his contact information.
He mentioned, ‘Should there be any further need for music, you can reach me.’ Essentially, I’m always available and reachable. I’m quite pleased with what I accomplished.
The Amazon-produced version of God of War hasn’t debuted yet, but the production process is progressing positively to the point where showrunner Ronald D. Moore has announced that it has received approval for another season.
Currently, I’m engaged in the process of transforming a popular video game titled “God of War” into a series. This game is quite renowned in the gaming community, and Amazon has commissioned not one but two seasons for it. They’ve invited me to contribute, and as we speak, I’m immersed in the writers’ room, working on this new project.
From what I’ve heard buzzing around, it seems like there might be a fresh installment in the God of War series this year, focusing on a captivating side-story instead of the main narrative. Fingers crossed!
