X-Men’s Most Controversial Romance Returns: Are Laura and Julian Back Together?

As an ardent fan of the X-Men saga, I can hardly contain my excitement upon hearing whispers that two beloved characters are reigniting their romantic connection. While the X-Men are renowned for their extraordinary mutant abilities and thrilling narratives, a subtler yet equally intriguing element has always been the interwoven love stories. From the complex dynamics of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine to the tumultuous tale of Gambit and Rogue, love has consistently played a significant role in this extraordinary universe. Although some relationships culminate in joyful unions, many end tragically, leaving fans heartbroken. This was the fate that befell Laura Kinney (X-23 at the time) and Julian Keller (Hellion), whose romantic journey together met an untimely end. However, Marvel has hinted that a new chapter may be unfolding for Wolverine and Hellion, sparking fresh hope for their love story.

The June issue of Laura Kinney: Wolverine #7 showcases Laura Kinney and Julian Keller locked in a deep kiss while holding each other tightly. It’s been some time since these two X-Men were an official couple, and they’ve both evolved significantly since then. Nevertheless, Marvel seems to be hinting that the pair might have reunited. However, it’s worth noting that comic book cover art often depicts scenes that are not entirely accurate within the story itself.

Marve revisits one of the X-Men’s hottest love affairs

As a fervent reader who had followed the captivating narrative of NYX, I’m well-acquainted with the intriguing dynamic between Wolverine and Hellion. Yet, in our beloved comic, they were engaged in a conflict where their allegiances lay on opposite sides—mutants versus humans. The remarkable Laura Kinney was one of the central figures in NYX, sharing the stage with Ms. Marvel, Prodigy, Anole, and Sophie Cuckoo.

The initial storyline of this series saw the X-Men clashing against a band of mutant extremists, which included Julian Keller, self-proclaimed as Krakoan, Empath, and the Stepford Cuckoos. In an unexpected turn, Julian admitted to Laura that some of the terroristic acts he committed were not genuine, hinting at the possibility that he might not be as malevolent as his actions suggested.

Despite the seemingly idyllic scenario portrayed on the cover of Laura Kinney: Wolverine #7, it’s unclear if this represents reality. In Issue #5, Laura was ambushed from behind and seemed to enter a trance-like state. The synopsis for Issue #6 suggests that she encounters a disturbing choice when offered a dream life with her father, Logan, and sister Gabby. Some force is influencing Laura to attain everything she desires, which might involve a renewed relationship with Hellion.

Before the launch of “Laura Kinney: Wolverine”, ComicBook had a chat with Erica Schultz. They delved into the book’s purpose and Erica’s intentions to reveal various aspects of Laura’s character.

Laura often appears angry, yet I wanted to highlight her optimistic side as well,” Schultz revealed. “Though this trait is hidden, it will emerge occasionally throughout the series. As she interacts with other characters, she’ll come to realize that there’s still goodness in the world amidst the daily onslaught of horrors. It seems quite pertinent to reality, as it were.
