Approximately a year ago, Microsoft started its endeavor to distribute first-party Xbox games on other systems. There were many whispers about popular titles appearing on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, and while “Hi-Fi Rush” and “Sea of Thieves” stood out, there was some discontent over the games that didn’t materialize. However, within a few months, the general feeling shifted – all of a sudden, nothing was off-limits for Microsoft, and they demonstrated this by announcing “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” for PlayStation 5.
In a few months following the release of the PC and Xbox Series X/S versions, it was time for a significant leap – the announcement of Forza Horizon 5 ensued, along with renewed whispers about games like Starfield and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. At last, PlayStation 5 users would get to enjoy franchises that had been exclusive to Xbox for years, even decades.
With the imminent arrival of the Great Circle, set to launch on April 17th for Sony’s console, let’s take a look at how this edition stacks up against other platforms.
Without delay, let me clarify – the game titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is visually stunning. Built on a branch of id Tech 7, it boasted breathtaking beauty on both PC and Xbox Series X upon release, although some players initially encountered challenges with the former’s system specifications. The question remains, does this visual grandeur translate well to the PS5? What about its performance?
It’s fortunate that, similar to other Xbox games on PS5, “The Great Circle” has been successfully ported over with excellent results. While there are minor aspects in the graphics that could use refinement, they are present even in the PC and Xbox Series X versions. Despite these minor flaws, the game looks impressive right out of the box and its performance is stable and reliable.
As a dedicated enthusiast, what truly captivates me about this production is that it’s dynamically rendered in 4K resolution at an impressive 60 frames per second. The standout feature? Ray-traced global illumination, which brings the results to life spectacularly. This technology imbues indoor settings, whether they’re buildings or caves, with a natural indirect lighting that casts sharp shadows. Even during more intense scenes where resolution momentarily dips, the image quality and pixel count remain remarkably high, ensuring an overall visually pleasing experience.
Regarding other developers facing challenges in achieving high visual quality and smooth performance when incorporating ray tracing, The Great Circle truly shines as an exceptional example. I must admit, I’m amazed by how MachineGames managed to optimize it so impressively for consoles. This impressive optimization translates seamlessly to the PS5 with no noticeable issues whatsoever.
How do the console versions of this game compare to each other? Specifically, does the PS5 edition surpass the Xbox Series X when we consider them both alongside the PC version, or are they roughly equal in performance? Let’s explore that question.
In this rephrased text, I used “of this game” instead of “each other”, as it helps clarify the context of the comparison. Additionally, I replaced “beat out” with “surpasses”, to maintain a consistent tone and make the sentence easier to read. Lastly, I added “when we consider them both alongside the PC version,” to explicitly state that all three platforms are being compared, making the question clearer.
PS5 vs. Xbox Series X
You’d find it challenging to spot significant differences between the game versions on either console because the porting work has been meticulously done. The gameplay maintains a consistent 60 frames per second, with only occasional minor frame rate drops that don’t disrupt the overall experience much. Loading times are also quite comparable; once you’ve selected your settings and default difficulty, the transition to gameplay is swift on both platforms. Resuming a save and returning to the main menu is effortless and quick on both consoles.
The pop-in issue, where shadows and some objects load as you approach, might be the most conspicuous flaw, but the game’s overall distance and level of detail are still remarkable on consoles, especially during intense sequences when it may go unnoticed. However, during exploration sequences such as walking through the jungle in the Prologue or exploring ruins or larger open maps, this pop-in becomes more noticeable. Despite this minor issue, the game continues to offer an immense level of realism and exceptional performance overall.
PS5 vs. PC
In this comparison, you’ll find that the difference between dynamic resolution and native 4K becomes more apparent. Our testing setup includes an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, and 32 GB of RAM. We adjusted settings to maximum wherever possible, whether Supreme or Ultra, except for Volumetrics Quality which is set to Medium. We utilized Nvidia DLSS in Quality Mode, but disabled Dynamic Resolution.
It’s quite evident that the PC version takes the lead. While there were minor instances where the frame rate dipped slightly, it largely maintained a smooth 60 frames per second. It also provided sharp resolution and outstanding image quality. Occasionally, some pop-in issues surfaced but they didn’t significantly affect the gaming experience.
Even though the dynamic resolution of the PS5 (similarly affecting Xbox Series X) may seem less impressive when compared directly to a native 4K image, it’s generally challenging to spot significant variations in graphics quality otherwise. This, fortunately, indicates that both consoles deliver comparable visual quality in games.
Regarding the PC version, even if it didn’t meet the specifications for running on Supreme/Ultra settings for everyone, it managed to deliver an astonishing visual performance. This suggests that MachineGames has done a great job optimizing the game, ensuring you’ll still get top-notch quality and smooth performance, though individual experiences might differ slightly.
Conclusion
What stands out most about “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is not only its top-notch gameplay, but also the fact that you don’t have to pick a specific version to enjoy it (although playing on Xbox Series S might be a bit challenging). It runs smoothly across Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC, offering exceptional performance with a near 60 frames per second rate and stunning graphical detail that really highlights the capabilities of id Tech 7. The fact that it can deliver all this with ray-traced global illumination enabled and maintaining a close proximity to 4K on consoles makes it an impressive technical feat in many aspects.
Apart from its technical elements, what sets “The Great Circle” apart is its exceptional art direction and cinematic style. The replication of the opening scene from “Raiders” in the Prologue, along with the breathtaking visual spectacle of settings like Egypt and the Himalayas, makes it a delight for fans of the series and action-adventure enthusiasts. MachineGames impresses even when portraying diverse weather conditions such as snowfall and rain, by meticulously detailing each scene.
As an ardent fan, let me tell you that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is simply extraordinary! It perfectly captures the essence of the films’ character and ambiance. It’s a delightful blend of nostalgia and innovation, filled with the classic Indy quirks and allure, while offering a fresh, engaging narrative brimming with adventure, brain-teasing puzzles, and tantalizing mysteries. If you haven’t experienced it yet on Xbox Series X or PC, now’s your chance as it makes its long-awaited debut on PS5!
