Your Honor, it appears that Kim Kardashian was unable to attend the Blue Origin space launch due to a significant personal matter requiring her attention.
Indeed, during that time, Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner were in West Texas to lend support to their friend Lauren Sánchez, along with Gayle King, Katy Perry, Aisha Bowe (a former NASA rocket scientist), Amanda Nguyen (an activist), and Kerianne Flynn (a producer) on their groundbreaking space mission on April 14. However, Kim was unable to join them for this particular event.
Kim continues to reach out as she should have been with us, being occupied with law school studies and having a significant exam. This was conveyed by Kris from the West Texas launch site on April 14th to Blue Origin. Despite her absence, she expresses strong feelings of ‘fear of missing out’ (FOMO), eagerly seeking updates about the event. Her determination serves as an inspiration, and we are indeed proud of each and every one of the girls.
Of the mission crew, Kris continued, “It’s such a brave thing to do.”
Last month, Kim reached another milestone in her budding legal career by completing the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) on March 31. However, while Kris, who is the mother of Kourtney Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Rob Kardashian, and Kendall Jenner, congratulated Kim on her law school achievement, she kept her gaze fixed on the groundbreaking space journey that was unfolding.
The Kardashians’ mother expressed that they are present to stand by their girlfriend and friends. She never imagined she’d be speaking from space, making this a truly exceptional moment. They feel incredibly privileged to witness this historic event and be a part of it.
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but feel overjoyed about the fact that my little girl, True Thompson, and I will get to witness an extraordinary moment – the historic first all-woman crewed space flight since 1963. This is truly a milestone for us all!
The founder of Good American expressed excitement, stating that today holds great historical significance and is incredibly inspiring. Particularly, as a father of a seven-year-old girl, it’s particularly impactful for her to witness events such as this.
Prior to takeoff, Khloe was accompanied by Kris, Jeff Bezos (Lauren’s fiancé), Orlando Bloom (Katy’s fiancé), and Oprah Winfrey (Gayle’s best friend). This group gathered to witness the event. Before they embarked, Khloe shared some final words.
Khloe expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “What great fortune! Let’s savor this moment.” She continued, “I can hardly wait. The staff at Blue Origin consistently encourages us not to capture the experience through our phones, but to see it with our own eyes and be as immersed in the present as we can. And that’s exactly what I love – being fully engaged in the here and now.

Established by Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, in 2000, Blue Origin is a private space exploration firm based in Kent, Washington. According to their official site, their mission involves utilizing the resources of space to benefit Earth and expanding human presence beyond our planet through enhanced transportation and the development of habitable destinations in low Earth orbit.
Blue Origin is working towards these objectives by designing reusable rockets and engines, with the aim of lowering space travel costs, making it more accessible for civilians, and promoting sustainability. During a 2016 Pathfinder Awards talk, Bezos expressed their vision as “millions of people living and working in space.” They are focused on significantly reducing the cost of space travel by focusing on reusability.
As for the cost of booking a seat on a Blue Origin flight, while the company doesn’t publicly list prices, they do require a $150,000 deposit.
Named after astronaut Alan Shepard, who achieved history by being the first American to travel into space in 1961, New Shepard is what Blue Origin refers to as a “completely reusable, suborbital rocket system designed for human flights.”
The pressurized crew capsule of New Shepard can accommodate six individuals. However, unlike traditional spacecraft, there’s no pilot seat because the vehicle is fully autonomous – it operates without pilots according to Blue Origin’s website.
New Shepard made its initial launch in 2015 as part of a test flight program consisting of 16 successful tests, which were completed in 2021.
In July of that year, Bezos and his brother Mark, along with an auction winner who paid $28 million for the opportunity, took part in New Shepard’s first human flight. William Shatner and Michael Strahan were also among the passengers to board the vehicle later that year (on separate missions).
The upcoming voyage will be New Shepard’s 31st mission (hence the name NS-31) and its 11th human flight.
The NS-31 mission of New Shepard is scheduled for takeoff from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One, nestled within the Guadalupe Mountain range in the West Texas desert, on April 14th. According to their website, the launch window commences at 8:30 a.m. (Central Daylight Time).
According to Blue Origin’s website, the astronauts on board New Shepard ascend at over three times the speed of sound and cross the Kármán line, which is recognized as the edge of space located approximately 62 miles (or 100 km) above Earth. Once they reach this height, they are able to unfasten their seatbelts, experience weightlessness, and admire our planet from space. The crew eventually descend back to Earth softly under parachutes. The total journey is said to last around 11 minutes.
The team for mission NS-31 includes singer Katy Perry, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, STEMBoard founder Aisha Bowe (formerly of NASA), bioastronautics research scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, and former TV anchor Lauren Sánchez. Notably, this is the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova, a Soviet Union cosmonaut, embarked on a solo mission and became the first woman to travel to space.
Nguyen will be making history as the first Vietnamese woman to venture into space, while Bowe will be etched in history books as the first person of Bahamian descent to tread where few have gone before.
Each crew member has personal motivations driving their participation in this mission. For instance, Perry wants to inspire her daughter Daisy, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom, to dream big and believe that anyone can achieve their dreams regardless of background, ethnicity, financial status, or educational level. King, who admitted feeling anxious, aims to motivate people to venture beyond their comfort zones. She hopes that by taking this step, she will open doors for others who may have hesitated but are now eagerly joining the journey. Nguyen, on the other hand, sees this as an opportunity to realize a long-held dream. Having faced gender-based violence in her past, she took a break from astronomy to fight for her rights as a sexual assault survivor. After a decade of advocacy, she now wishes to honor her pre-traumatized self by pursuing her original passion for the stars.
As reported by Good Morning America, each member of the crew is scheduled to travel to the launch site prior to the mission, where they will participate in training exercises. These sessions involve getting tailored for their flight suits, familiarizing themselves with the spacecraft, learning effective communication techniques with ground control, and reviewing safety procedures.
Despite the team’s collective preparations, certain crew members opted to carry out their own individual readiness routines prior to the mission. For instance, Bowe intensified his training over the past year, completed a NASTAR simulation for a realistic flight experience, and even booked a fighter jet flight, eagerly anticipating it. He also mentioned several zero-gravity simulation flights that he underwent. In these simulations, a Boeing 747 is flown in a parabolic pattern so when the plane descends, everyone experiences weightlessness – a feeling Bowe plans to enjoy during the mission. Additionally, Flynn went through NASTAR training in Philadelphia and experienced up to five Gs of pressure.
Here are a few individuals and what they plan to bring along for their missions:
– Nancy Conrad, the wife of Pete Conrad (the third man to walk on the moon), is a mentor and inspiration to Bowe. She’s given Bowe the Apollo 12 flag, which will be flown during the mission, and Bowe is also taking plant samples from Winston-Salem State University’s Astrobotany Lab as well as dehydrated conch chowder for the mission to honor The Bahamas.
– Nguyen is packing personal items for her journey, including shells from her mother’s island and a promise she made to herself after overcoming an assault. This promise reads “Never ever give up,” which she wrote down and taped to her laptop during her recovery and fight for her rights. Additionally, according to her Instagram, Nguyen will bring the pen that former President Obama used to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, a coin from the Nguyen dynasty, and Freetown cotton tree seeds.
Stars have sent encouraging messages to the crew, with King receiving a farewell video from CBS Mornings, featuring Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, Drew Barrymore, and others. “Good luck,” said the Charlie’s Angels actress, expressing her eagerness to discuss the mission once they return home.
On the other hand, Olivia Munn has voiced her disapproval. During an appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends on April 3, she questioned the purpose of the mission, stating that there are more pressing issues in the world and mentioning the high cost involved, comparing it to the struggles of people who can’t even afford basic necessities like eggs. She also called the mission “a bit gluttonous.”
King acknowledges the criticism regarding Bezos and Blue Origin, admitting that it is concerning but arguing that in this case, the mission transcends one man and one company. In her view, it’s possible to support both the mission and other causes simultaneously.
