Marathon Director Says “Everyone Has Their Definition of What is the Right Price”

Following an eagerly anticipated gameplay unveiling over the weekend, Bungie’s Marathon has sparked plenty of debate. There’s been plenty of applause for its visuals, reservations about the gameplay, and a lot of curiosity about the pricing, particularly given that it includes a Battle Pass.

The Marathon game isn’t a free-to-play one, and while Bungie hasn’t specified the exact cost yet (with further details coming this summer), they have confirmed that it won’t be a full-priced title. However, you might wonder why Bungie opted to steer clear of the free-to-play model?

On the Friends Per Second Podcast (transcribed by VGC), director Joe Ziegler expressed that they aim to present content compelling enough for someone to join their journey, yet they are also dedicated to maintaining faith with previous seasons by continually enhancing the game without raising the retail price.

We aim to convey that our primary goal is to develop an exceptional game, and we believe we’ve made a solid start in that direction at present. However, everyone may have their unique perspective on what constitutes the optimal price point.

Absolutely, everyone has their own unique perception of value. Upon its release, Marathon will offer three maps and six characters to play as. An additional map will follow shortly after, but while there are ambitious plans for seasonal quests, Bungie acknowledges that the storyline might seem thin initially. Whether this content proves satisfying to players is still uncertain.

The game ‘Marathon’ is set to launch on the 23rd of September for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers. A closed alpha testing period will take place from the 23rd of April until the 4th of May.
