Chopper’s Shocking War Crimes: 5 Times the Droid Broke the Rules in Star Wars Rebels

In the vast Star Wars universe, droids play roles just as pivotal as the iconic heroes and villains. R2-D2, though less outspoken than C-3PO, was instrumental in crucial missions during the Clone Wars alongside Anakin, significantly contributing to the Rebellion. The Rebel Alliance might never have toppled the Death Star without R2’s assistance. However, not all droids possess the same helpful or friendly nature as the beloved Star Wars duo. Case in point: C1-10P, often called Chopper, is another astromech droid, but his distinct attitude has earned him the nickname of “war criminal” among Star Wars fans. Chopper made his debut in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, serving as Hera Syndulla’s loyal droid companion. When a young Hera rescued Chopper from a damaged Y-wing during the Clone Wars, she fixed him, nurtured him, and eventually forged an unbreakable bond with him.

Chopper, grumpy and unpredictable, often disregards military regulations and principles during warfare. He frequently disobeys commands, embarks on solo ventures for personal gain, and creates distress among his comrades aboard the Ghost. It’s no surprise that Chopper amassed approximately 50,000 kills in just the first three seasons of Rebels. Let’s examine some instances where Chopper may have overstepped the boundaries of acceptable conduct on the battlefield.

Attempted Murder

The latest addition to the Ghost’s crew is Ezra Bridger, a Jedi padawan. From their very first encounter in the initial episode, it was clear that Bridger had a knack for stirring up trouble. Chopper, our astromech droid, didn’t waste any time with the newcomer, going as far as unscrewing all the bolts on Ezra’s bunk beds shared with Zeb, and even intentionally colliding with him. However, there was one occasion where mischief escalated to a life-threatening situation. While they were on an Imperial Interdictor ship, Chopper activated the gravity, causing Ezra to plummet towards certain death. Remarkably, Ezra managed to grip a ledge and hoist himself up, but not without Chopper giving him another kick as he struggled to evade impending doom.

Homicide

In simple terms, during three out of the four seasons, Chopper’s tally of kills stands without needing explanation – it’s 50,000. In Season 2, Episode 19, titled “The Forgotten Droids,” Chopper disobeys Hera’s unspoken command not to pilfer from the market, searching for a new leg part that would match his existing one. After stealing it, he hastily escapes, only to discover the Ghost was already absent. Desperate, Chopper hid himself on an Imperial vessel where he encountered a mistreated protocol droid named AP-5. When Stormtroopers found out about the rebel (Chopper) aboard, AP-5 cleverly lured them towards the airlock and ejected the entire squad into space, effectively eliminating them.

Sabotage

In a twist of events, Chopper proves to be as clever as he is eccentric. In episode 14 of Season 3, titled “Warhead,” the rebels grapple with an undercover agent within their ranks. Agent Kallus, posing as the rebel spy Fulcrum, alerts the rebel base about a new Imperial spy droid. Once its identity is exposed, the droid transforms into attack mode, engaging Zeb, Chopper, and AP-5 in combat. With swift electric shocks, Chopper manages to subdue the droid.

The rebels then devise a plan to return the droid to its Star Destroyer origin. AP-5 gets to work on resetting the droid, but Chopper murmurs cryptic comments during this process. As fate would have it, when the Imperial droid reaches its home ship, it initiates a self-destruct sequence and explodes, causing damage in the process. It turns out that the entire sequence of events was part of Chopper’s intricate plan.

Destruction of Property

In Season 3, Episode 5, Grand Admiral Thrawn assumes his role to track down the Rebels, eventually infiltrating Hera’s household. All belongings of the Syndulla family were now under Thrawn’s control, which he used to gather intel on his adversaries by studying family artifacts. When the crew discovers the intrusion, they hastily journey to Ryloth with the intention of infiltrating the residence. However, Thrawn proves too shrewd and quickly catches on, exposing Ezra disguised as a Stormtrooper and Hera posing as a servant girl. In an attempt to retrieve a valuable heirloom, Hera lunges for it, but Thrawn seizes it instead. Recognizing defeat, Ezra and Hera opt for plan B: Escape. As they flee, they are reunited with Sabine and Chopper, who shows great enthusiasm. Once far enough from the compound, Chopper detonates the bombs and destroys the Syndulla home.

Child Endangerment

In the series “Rebels,” there are characters known as the Inquisitors, who are Force-users operating under Darth Vader’s command, tasked with tracking down and eliminating any Jedi or Force-sensitive children. During Season 2, Episode 10 titled “The Future of the Force,” two Inquisitors abduct two newborns with Force abilities, then proceed to a third location to secure the third child. When Ezra and Kanan discovered their scheme, they set out to thwart them. Along the way, they consulted Zeb and Chopper, who were searching for the remaining babies. The duo found one of the infants in an Inquisitor’s ship, and Zeb, disapproving of simply leaving the baby behind, expressed concern about blowing up the vessel, given there was a baby on board. Zeb was particularly appalled by Chopper’s idea of destroying the ship with the child inside, as anyone would be. However, in the end, it was Chopper who ended up safeguarding and caring for the foundling instead.
