Among the exciting innovations in the Nintendo Switch 2 is the ability of its Joy-Con 2 controllers to function like a mouse. This means players can simply lay the flat side of a Joy-Con on a table and start playing games as if they were using a computer mouse. This could potentially revolutionize the gaming experience for Nintendo Switch 2, broadening the scope of game design possibilities. However, it’s the games specifically designed to utilize this feature that will determine its success or failure.
Luckily, with the upcoming launch of Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th, certain games are already catching our eye as excellent demonstrations of the Switch 2’s mouse control capabilities. If you’re intrigued by this innovative console control method, then these Switch 2 games are worth keeping an eye on.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
In the majority of previews for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, showcased during the unveiling of the Switch 2, you’ll notice critics praising the ability to seamlessly switch to mouse controls for aiming, which they find responsive and enjoyable. IGN referred to Metroid Prime 4 as a “superb demonstration” of the Switch 2’s mouse controls, while Digital Trends described playing the game this way as similar to using a PC mouse in a shooter game, significantly altering the rhythm of battles. Here’s hoping that this new Metroid Prime game establishes a high standard for FPS mouse control on the Switch 2, inspiring future games in the same genre on the platform to follow suit.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be released for Switch 2 sometime later this year.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
For me, as an enthusiast of strategy games, the prospect of playing the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Sid Meier’s Civilization VII” is incredibly enticing among its launch titles. Although I’m fond of 4X games on PC, I’ve never been satisfied with their console counterparts due to the awkwardness of using a controller. However, the Switch 2 version of “Civilization VII” might offer a more appealing experience because of the ability to navigate intuitively with a mouse on a console. Despite needing adjustments for keyboard shortcuts from the PC version, this portable console adaptation of such a complex game feels far more inviting. Similar to how I anticipate “Metroid Prime 4” setting a benchmark, I hope that this game will pave the way for future strategy titles on Switch 2 to emulate its success.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches on June 5th.
Drag x Drive
Drag ‘n’ Drive marks the debut of the second Switch title explicitly designed for mouse controls, and it stands out as the most innovative among them. This is a wheelchair basketball game where players maneuver using their Joy-Con controllers in various directions when switched to mouse mode. The game appears challenging and fatiguing to play, but I’m eager to experience how intuitive it feels once I get a chance to try it out. Despite the potential exhaustion, I admire Nintendo for daring to experiment with unique design concepts to introduce fresh playing styles.
Drag x Drive has a summer 2025 release window.
Mouse Work
You may not be familiar with “Mouse Work” as it didn’t make an appearance in the Switch 2 Direct, but it’s a captivating indie game designed around mouse controls by the creators of “Shovel Knight Dig”. This party game supports one to four players and requires completing tasks that revolve around mouse controls, such as stacking blocks or shutting down pop-up ads on the screen. Its fast-paced action and gameplay style, reminiscent of games like “WarioWare”, “Part-Time UFO”, and “Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together!”, has earned it a spot among the most eagerly awaited indie games for the Switch 2.
The exact release date for “Mouse Work” isn’t confirmed yet, but the developers hint that it might come out shortly following the launch of Switch 2.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster
It’s possible you didn’t realize that the upgraded Switch version of Square Enix’s remarkable RPG, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster, includes a few mini-games primarily operated by mouse clicks. One is a rhythm game, while another challenges players to manage an airship and fix continuous issues with the use of mouse controls, which I found intriguing during Bravely Default’s Nintendo Treehouse live demonstrations. If these games offer some complexity, I might employ them to familiarize myself with mouse controls when the game launches.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster launches alongside the system on June 5.
