What’s the view from your sofa?
The television is relatively small, measuring around 20 inches. Nearby, I’ve placed my latest mushroom-growing apparatus since I enjoy cultivating plants. I’m currently growing pink oyster mushrooms, which are quite tasty. On the opposite side, there’s an easel where I paint, and a large canvas is mounted on it, but I haven’t started working on it yet due to my apprehension.
In a simpler and more conversational manner: “I have a couple of BAFTAs at home. Among them, baby items like a stroller and plenty of diapers because my partner and I recently had a son last October. Outside my house in Birmingham, there’s a growing collection of trash bags due to the ongoing strike by bin workers.
Are you enjoying fatherhood?
“I love it. I’m in a very happy, golden era of my life right now.”
What have you watched recently?
1) “Big Boys is outstanding, while Alma’s Not Normal is exquisitely crafted – there’s a comeback of sitcoms. Additionally, we host many movie screenings for families with young children. Now it makes for a delightful family outing. We were fans of Black Bag, but Captain America: Brave New World was one of the most disappointing things I’ve ever encountered, and Mufasa: The Lion King was an unfortunate tarnish to the original Lion King storyline.
In Joe Lycett‘s “United States of Birmingham,” one tours various cities named Birmingham across the U.S., aiming to establish friendly alliances with as many of them as possible by signing official agreements.

What was it like growing up in your Birmingham?
Initially, I found the place quite disappointing, eagerly anticipating a change. Despite having a joyful upbringing, there weren’t many activities available. A TV series named Sinchronicity on BBC Three, based in Manchester, piqued my interest as it seemed entertaining, so I relocated there. At first, I decided to sever ties with Birmingham, but later discovered that Birmingham boasts a vibrant art scene and numerous exciting dining and drinking spots.
Do you feel better when you’re in Birmingham?
Who’s your favourite Brummie?
Alison Hammond, with her infectious humor, intelligence, and warmth, can turn anyone into a friend. Her genuine interest in people makes her an exceptional individual who truly deserves all her achievements. Meanwhile, Carl Chinn is a local historian known for his engaging writing about the authentic Peaky Blinders. He believes that the show has unjustifiably glamorized them, as they were actually brutal and ruthless individuals.

Are the creative industries still too London-centric?
It seems like things are improving, but to truly bring forth a wide array of captivating, unique perspectives, investing resources for their discovery is crucial. Lacking such investment may result in only those individuals who have the backing of their families or personal wealth entering the creative sectors.
Are people recognizing you for your blend of humor and activism? In your opinion, shouldn’t more famous individuals leverage their influence to drive positive change?
As a film enthusiast, I firmly believe that every individual has the potential to contribute positively to society, not just the limelight-grabbing celebrities. However, let’s not forget that taking a stand often comes with its own set of challenges. The spotlight can be as blinding as it is dazzling, and it might lead to confrontations or adversity. It’s a question I often ask myself: am I truly ready to face these adversaries and weather the storm of criticism? Do I possess the resilience, mental fortitude, and emotional balance to carry out such tasks? It’s not an easy choice, it’s a heavy burden indeed!
