The premiere of “The Last of Us” season 2 has kicked off with quite a bang, introducing at least one (thus far) new type of infected that Ellie encounters in a chilling showdown. While the first season of this post-apocalyptic series introduced clickers, bloaters, and runners, it appears that viewers will be treated to a more intelligent and unsettling version of the infected for the eagerly awaited second season of “The Last of Us.

In the opening episode of Season 2 of The Last of Us, Ellie and Dina venture into a deserted market following the discovery of a band of deceased infected and a brutally slain bear in the vicinity. Despite Kat (a former girlfriend of Ellie) expressing reservations about their departure from the patrol to investigate the store, they proceed regardless and eliminate two clickers that had entered. However, later on, Ellie accidentally falls through the floor into a subterranean warehouse, becoming trapped. Believing herself to be alone at first, she encounters an infected creature that moves on four legs and has been observing her from one of the shelves. As Ellie’s attention is turned elsewhere, viewers are finally given a glimpse of this mysterious figure before it retreats to conceal itself once more and then resurfaces to seize her. This type of infected had not previously appeared in the series, but fans of the games will undoubtedly recognize its ominous growls and stealthy mannerisms.

Bella Ramsey Opens up About the Stalker Scene in The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 1

In an interview with Collider, Bella Ramsey discusses Ellie’s chilling encounter with a stalker-type infected in the first episode of The Last of Us season 2. According to Ramsey, Ellie is confident and cocky as she roams through the warehouse, assuming she’s alone and nothing can frighten her due to past experiences. However, things take a sinister turn when Ellie encounters an unfamiliar stalker-type infected, which startles her because it behaves in a way that no other infected she has encountered before has acted. Ramsey explains that this unexpected creature catches Ellie off guard and leaves her with a stomach bite.

Dina tells Ellie to stay put, but instead, Ellie explores and wanders around. She seems to be imagining what this place looked like in 2003, before the world changed drastically.

Ramsey describes the stalker as unsettling and admits that Ellie wasn’t fully prepared for the situation. However, she also mentions that filming it was enjoyable yet eerie. Interestingly, it wasn’t only Ellie who seemed terrified; Ramsey too found the experience chilling when they later watched the footage with added sound. “Watching it back, I find it scary because, of course, the sound hadn’t been included at that point. The way it has been edited makes it incredibly more frightening. When I first saw it, my heart raced, even though I knew what was coming up.

Characters known as Stalkers in the series The Last of Us are often recognizable due to their distinctive, guttural growls, even when they’re trying to stay concealed. Physically, Stalkers usually have mushroom growths sprouting directly from their heads, obscuring one of their eyes. Despite their aggressive nature being similar to Runners, Stalkers demonstrate a higher level of intelligence and seem to strategize their actions with careful planning. Showrunner Craig Mazin hinted that Season 2 will feature more Cordyceps-infected beings, including an increase in the chilling, eerie Stalkers, which gamers may find themselves shuddering at just hearing mentioned. Mazin teased, “As for those who desire to see more of the infected… Hang on tight!”.

New episodes of The Last Of Us Season 2 will premiere on HBO at 9 pm EST every Sunday until May 25.
