Trump’s Bizarre Home Alone 2 Cameo: A Curse for Chris Columbus

In a recent interview, director Chris Columbus confessed that Donald Trump’s small role in “Home Alone 2” has weighed heavily on his reputation over the years, but he hasn’t been able to excise it from the film. During the conversation with The San Francisco Chronicle, Columbus expressed concerns about potential repercussions from Trump or even potential deportation if he attempted to edit the movie—although this was likely a humorous exaggeration. Trump appeared briefly in the 1992 production while Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) was at The Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned at the time; however, it wasn’t until 2020 that Columbus revealed that Trump had actually demanded that cameo as a condition for filming on his property. Now, the director is left pondering if the price was too high.

Columbus expressed concern, ‘I can’t stay here,’ implying he might face deportation due to potential changes in immigration policies. He hinted that he would need to leave the United States and possibly return to Italy or another place if his residency status became uncertain.”

The interviewer perceived Columbus as being sarcastic, given his American birth and only distant Irish ancestry. However, the Trump administration’s evolving immigration policies have made it challenging to predict the future.

Columbus expressed that the cameo has turned into a “burden” for him, and he “longs for its removal.” Many films have been modified upon re-release, particularly in the streaming age, but Columbus believes such alterations would be excessive. It’s evident that Trump would hold firm opinions on this matter as well, given his prior challenge to Columbus’ account of the cameo’s origin.

In 2020, according to Columbus, Trump requested to make a cameo in Home Alone 2 as part of their deal for filming there. Moreover, the production had to pay a typical high fee for using the location, but Trump’s appearance was a bit unconventional. It wasn’t until three years later that Trump countered on his Truth Social platform, stating that Columbus was actually asking him to be in the movie. He also asserted that the film wouldn’t have been successful without his involvement.

In a recent interview with The Chronicle, Columbus eventually addressed the comments made in previous posts. The director questioned, “What could possibly be going on inside his head?” as he claimed that Columbus had accused him of lying. However, the director emphasized that he was not lying and reiterated that Columbus had never begged a non-actor to star in a film, despite claims suggesting otherwise. Instead, they were eager to secure the Plaza Hotel for their production.

In 1992, Trump was relatively unknown beyond certain circles in the media, but well-known to some New Yorkers due to his extravagant personality and grandiose real estate ventures, particularly Trump Tower. He hadn’t yet gained widespread recognition through reality TV. Trump purchased the renowned Plaza Hotel in 1988 with a substantial loan from a group of 16 banks. In 1992, he sought bankruptcy protection for the hotel after it had been used as a filming location for “Home Alone 2”.
